Finally deciding on a paint scheme.

Choosing a paint scheme for any army can at times be an incredible frustrating thing to do, especially if you have a bad habit of over thinking everything. In the case of the Infesters I could have very easilly chosen something that reminded me of the original insecticons from the Transformers G1 cartoon but I’d seen it done already a number of times and so I wanted to do something else.

My second thought was to go into the area of chameleon paints, or colorshift paints as I actually own a huge set of them but one of our other members already had that idea then it hit me.

I’d been in the process of testing out the new (at the time) AK Interactive 3rd generation paint line and their pastel colours had been praised, using atleast one pastel colour really excited me and so I began testing a few idea’s onto the mini’s themselves.

In the end I settled for the pale glue and pale purple idea I really liked the idea, could see a couple of ways to tweak it but then February got busy and I had to come back to my project.. Thats when the heart break happened

Rum8le breaks my heart

Rum8le is a wonderful painter thats been painting Bot War as well and for the month of February was painting all of his Infestors up for a competition they were running. What neither of us knew is that we’d both stumbled on a similar idea and whilst I was busy during the month of February he was busy, completed his entire force. I saw the results of the idea that had been in my head for the better part of a month and my heart sank. I still don’t even really know why I’d just really settled on the idea of my scheme being very unique and for some reason him beating me to the punch made me feel defeated.

Comparing yourself to others

We’ve all heard how bad of an idea this is but lets be frank here, we all do it, we’re all our own worst critics and often quite unfair to ourselves, an old store manager used to literally tell me off for insulting my own work so frequently. Now I don’t know if its because I saw him pull off my idea so perfectly exactly but for whatever reason him beating me to the punch defeated me for a good week or so, theres a little more to it than that (a snarky remark from someone unrelated to this conversation played a part).

But what I am trying to tell you right now is that it really shouldn’t matter if you and another player come up with similar or even the same idea’s. Make them your own and dont allow the skills of others or the doubts in your own head to limit your own idea’s or forbid you from trying to push your own painting limits.

Thankfully this actually turned out to be a great thing because the second paint scheme I found really excited me and that is where I hope you will begin to get excited about my project.

Teal & orange....Teal & orange....

FYI – These wings are yet to be glued on.

This is something I have dealt with myself on many occasions, and I do appreciate it can be a bit galling when it happens and I’m sorry if I caused any negative impact to your hobby. Truth be told I probably took some unconscious inspiration from seeing your early WIPs that got added to the mix of other art I saw in the run up to the painting challenge, so thank you for that! But, as you say, it led to you creating this new scheme which looks great. I love the 2D style you’re using and am so glad… Read more »
