Magnetising the hips/torso joint.
Drilling 20mm wide by 10mm deep for the magnets I’ve got. Used what’s called a Forstner drill bit in a pillar drill. As it uses a flat cutting edge, it give you a level bore hole in the base. Which should mean more contact area for the glue as the magnets have will have a silly amount of pull on them.
doesn’t the resin start to melt with that heavy tooling used?
It’s a woodworking bit, and the pillar drill was set to a very low speed. And the bit was brand new and super sharp, I hardly applied any pressure, but it bored it very easily. So I didn’t notice any heat buildup. A forstner bit essentially shaves the material away as opposed to cutting, so that might be why there wasn’t any heat buildup.
Oh I have a set of those and used them more then once on wood and for me they got pretty warm. But maybe I applied to much pressure.
Yeah, I only used light pressure, and regularly stopped to clear the swarf from the drill. Probably didn’t have a chance to heat up.
I have to admit all this talk of magnetising this kit seems very ambitious. The magnets will be taking a lot of weight. Are you also going to use pegs to take most of the weight with the magnets to just hold the part in place?
Nah, no pegs. I’m using N52 grade neodymium magnets. For example, the pull on the magnets I’ve used on the arm is 2.57kg, the Gatling blaster only (only lol) weighs 503gram. So not even at half the weight tolerance for the magnet. I’ve already tested the strength of the gun arm magnets and the shoulder launchers. They take the weight. Even went as far as shaking them to see if I could dislodge them, but they held firm.
