Cyberpunk in Oils
Whatcha gonna do when they come for you?
The rest of the police bundle assembled (no small job – fiddly metal buggers!) and more oil paints prepped. This will be the second go at oil painting so I’ll semi document the process and see how we compare to last time.
Primed in Skeleton Bone (the only acrylic on these will be the primer and the Matt varnish...I might allow myself to acrylic the black base rim but we’ll see!)
Slapped on Indigo all over. This colour will stain the primer and give a base for the wet on wet blending. There is some Prussian Blue on the mech because I had a brain fart at the beginning but it’s all fine as most is being removed anyway.
Next step is to gently wipe the Indigo away leaving the staining effect plus recess shading.
A light wipe later and we can now blend wet on wet.
Gently brushed on some Phthalo blue and the blending is already starting. 
Another light blend with Titanium White and the armour is starting to pop. Also blocked in some of the non-blue areas ready for the next stage.
More highlighting, mostly just with white, and then putting in the other details. Just the bases to do, I’m going to let the black get a bit dryer then blend in some cyberpunky colours.
looking good, how are you finding the paints?
Thanks! The pre-thinned paints were so much easier to work than using them out of the tube. There is also the need to work out which oil paints are actually any good for miniatures. I’ve been watching a lot of James Wappel and trying to make a list. There are some paints that have staining properties but there is no rhyme or reason in terms of pigments or transparency ratings, big differences between brands, and some colours are just balls no matter who makes them. not bad so far, I’m using Marco’s videos as instruction in which case all colours are useful and it’s more about blending the colour you want than using specific ones.
Yeah, Marco is quite happy to be mixed media to get the ultimate result which is probably where I’ll end up as I’m already seeing how some acrylic under painting could be useful, but it’s interesting to impose constraints to learn. Wappel is becoming an oil purist but he was also a professional 2D artist for 20 years before coming to mini painting so it’s not entirely fair to expect his results!
