I was really impressed that Gripping Beast and flipped their sprues around between their plastic sets and created the starting armies for the Vikings and Anglo Saxons.  Coming from Britain, they are probably the most famous of the pre eleventh century combatants for the Viking Age in Saga.  They probably are the most famous of the period also, even though there are many other different factions also.  With the Anglo-Saxons going on to create England, and in my eyes the Viking’s pushing the Scots into Pictland, and therefore pivotal in the creation of Scotland.

Looking at the starter sets themselves, beginning with the Anglo-Saxons, which could also be used as Anglo-Danes, you get enough parts to create a Warlord, eight Huscarls and sixteen Ceorls, which will give you two points of Heathguards, and two points of Warriors as your four points.  You also get another three armoured bodies and four unarmoured bodies, giving you extra models and options to play with.

For the Vikings, you get the same layout, a Warlord, eight Hirdmen, and sixteen Bondi, with the same spares that you get with the spare bodies, giving you another raft of options.  The two starter armies seem like a great introduction into the game, and I should be able to learn the basics with the sets, before looking into how to incorporate them into historical battles, looking at what else would be needed to create them.  Although I am currently thinking more Lindisfarne than Stamford Bridge (which is what the header image of the project is from).
