Hobby exploits 2020 and onward
First steps into Defiance.
I received my first batch of Defiance on last Friday of January. After checking inventory quickly (my copy had all the figures it should have) I put the boxes away, intimidated by the volume of work ahead of me.
The first decision I had to make was what bases to use. The box has over 40 miniatures (second wave will double that), most of them foes from Combined Army. My standard basing scheme for that faction doesn’t lend itself neither for boarding action type of scenarios nor for those played in alien jungle. On top pf that most of the minis in that faction has some weird hooves instead of feet which can make pining rather hard not to mention putting them on uneven surface.
My internal deliberations were cut short by @joshtogo who created inspiring sets of bases for his minis from the same game (see here: https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/1503825/). Looking at his glorious bases I created my own, mimicking his to an extent.
The hero bases are made from OpenLock spaceship floors from one of @2nd Dynasty spaceships.
The ones I plan to use with the Shasvasti are done in similar way from some 3d printable terrain inspired by art of H.R. Giger kickstarted couple of years ago.
Here are some prototypes:
Painting is very basic:
Hero bases: light grey basecoat, stipple any brawn and red you have, glaze pale blue grey over it, drybrush with white (over details, not entirety of the base), edge highlight with white. Yellowish parts: orange brown edge highlighted with moon yellow.
Badies bases: light grey base coat, white drybrush, blue and violet filters, white drybrush again, black wash.
Glad to see you dive in! Those look great.
Thanks man!
I’m still not sure about those alien bases, but that’s a problem for future me.
Well they definitely give the Alien aesthetic. I bet you’ll be pleased.
BTW the hooves really didn’t seem to be a problem for me. However, I do think the “filing down the tab until it forms a pin” approach, while time consuming, helped. Also, some cyanoacrylate glue accelerator came in handy as it allowed me to build up a base of glue/fill in gaps if necessary. (It also comes in really handy when assembling the minis)
Awesome work, like the way you captured the random texture from the tile and transferred it to the bases. I am still waiting for defiance, hopefully not long now. Sort of ready for it so I can continue my defiance project. Not looking forward to designing another load of base toppers. Just need the tiles to start.
Thank you! That’s a bit embarrassing, but I got so driven by Josh’s work that I checked the tile’s colours only after everything was done… But, yes they are close in style and colour yet still don’t completely blend which I find ideal. As for delivery, disruption caused by Brexit and pandemic is something very real in Ireland as well. My Defiance delivery took 9 days and travelled from Vigo through Madrid and Brussels (?!) and then by boat (?!) to Dublin. I hope that as soon as CB solves the formalities they’ll be able to organise some faster means… Read more »
Thanks Shingen, I will just keep tapping my feet I do have other things that I have been putting off doing on the go. Dont think I will need to resort to that unless it’s March or April when it arrives. Do love you had a Bob Ross moment though!
Oh those look fantastic! Defiance looks great, and I like your Eiger take on it.
