Welcome, welcome, welcome!

Here is where I’ll be talking about all things Hobby Space. Specifically, my own Hobby Space, my challenges, sins, solutions, fails, suggestions, tips and tricks, you name it.

The Ugly...

About three years ago, I had to downsize from a nice large house with a full basement dedicated to hobby and gaming…well mostly dedicated to storage for my wife’s junk, but I carved out a quarter for my own gaming.

Being a basement, the lighting was poor, and it was only good for actually playing games with a dedicated table and pool table style light above the table. Hobby tools and equipment were stored on resin shelves that created a sort of room, separating it from the rest of the basement. I did my painting up stairs at my office. But I still had to contend with my wife’s hoarding, and so my space got smaller and smaller, and soon overwhelmed.

The photos above show how limited my hobby space actually was, often overtaken by stuff just dropped on the desk because there was nowhere else to put it. I won’t horrify you all with photos of how bad the wife’s hoarding became, suffice to say it got worse and worse over time.

Every once in a while, on a good day, I was able to tidy the hobby desk off and get some modelling and painting done. This is what it looked like. Felt good to have room, and even better when it was tidy.

A decent workspace.A decent workspace.

The bad...

Moving out of that house was a much needed relief. As it allowed me to help my wife purge her hoard (which she wanted to do but was struggling, so this forced her to), and the resize allowed us to set dedicated space for personal hobby use, hideouts, and escapism.

However, we quickly ran out of space again as her hoarding tendencies resumed, and I was fully out of room. Two long years of struggling with that and we finally went our own way.
