Hero bases
I’ll be putting all of the Combined Army on different bases but I painted up the ones I settled on for the heroes. Nothing fancy but I thought they match the board art pretty well. They’re from Death Ray Designs (I can find out which if anyone is curious) and went together well (though you can see some that I got completely off center).
Process: I faffed about a whole lot on these. Multiple steps that may or may not have made a difference. I started with a dark grey and then did dry brush runs with successively brighter grays. That was too streaky still so I then sponged on some sepia ink and hit the panel edges as well. Then I sponged on pale grey to create a variegated but not dirty look. Then edge highlights with a really pale grey, largely over the bits I’d just darkened with sepia. Finally the edges got an orange brown, then highlighted up to a pale yellow and then a wash over them with the original orange brown.
I’m pleased with the result. I had a similar experience with my Nomad bases where I did a whole mess of stuff, each step of which didn’t really work or show up much but taken together did create a depth/texture that I liked.
