I painted a lot this weekend and I was considering buying a painting handle. I normally use the trusty Hex Pots from Games workshop. I find these adequate but not for painting for a long time. I would find myself stretching my hands a lot. That’s time not painting. You know what else is time not painting? A side project to make a painting handle! (didn’t take long).

I did look around before making this step. The GW ones seem ok, but I already bought paint that dried up, some of the pots were never even open and they are dry, but that’s a different moan. I didn’t like the idea of putting in a model and then changing it all the time. I may want to batch paint.

Redgrass game ones looked ok but a bit too thin. Another consumable to buy in the putty and I would need to buy 20 lids, and this may get expensive. I remember this being reviewed I think by Gerry, I seemed to remember him using two hex pots together. I tried this (only with white tack holding them together. Unlike Gerry I needed more girth. I did like the magnet on the bottom though.

I also seen Rathcore and though these looked great, they seemed to nice for me. I think I would destroy them in a day. I also checked several others and looked around Thingiverse.

At this point I am still hung up on getting my monies worth out of old GW paint, I like the magnets and want replaceable heads so I can batch paint and swap between models quickly.

I combined everything I wanted, more Girth, magnets, getting my monies worth, less height than two ports. I done a crap drawing on paper and went to fusion 360.

Design... or just numbers and a shape. Design... or just numbers and a shape.

I designed this quickly I gabbed a few tubular objects I had around and found something comfortable for me, I had my girth. And worked out that I didn’t want a full palm I settled on the vase shape.  I made a hole for the hex pot. Made some space for magnets 4x 6mm / 2 mm and checked I could fit 2 pence in the bottom of the hex pots, it fits perfectly. You can and remove the tab with clippers. I wanted a magnet on the bottom, but I am cheap and didn’t want to buy a powerful magnet for the bottom. I instead made this for 1 penny I already have a magnetised base. I also didn’t want suction to be an issue and to save resin and weight I hollowed out the middle.

After a little sanding on the bottom for the supports this turned out well. V1.1 is done and everything works. I glued the magnets in and the 1p. and then I checked my change jar and found enough magnetic 2p’s to fit them to all the bases.

The only thing I wanted to change is there is a slight twist that you can do on the Hex Pot when in the handle. v1.2 is already altered to remove this and is going onto print overnight.

I will let you know how it does
