With the platform cardboards cut out and the dowels ready, I used some tacky blue to get a general idea of the shape.

Simple square design. Simple square design.

Since the first one was a standard square watchtower, I tried some unusual shape for the second one.

The platform is an irregularly shaped pentagon. I aimed for three support beams with an angle. However, it did not look too good with the tacky blue. (Sorry, I forgot to take a picture.)

I then tried three support beams standing upright. It still looked a bit “off”, even for an orc structure, so I added a fourth beam.

To make the platforms, I used the cardboard as a template where I laid some carved Popsicle planks. (I discarded the cardboards after.)

In terms of height, most of my usual (ruined) buildings are about 2.5 inches high for each story (excluding any roof).

For the square watchtower, I aimed to make it two story high. That makes it 5 inches high from the ground to the top platform.

I’m also building a platform halfway to the top. This way, you can place your miniature on the middle platform if you do not have enough movement to get to the top.

The topmost story will protected with spikes and planks, so it will likely be heavy cover.

The halfway platform will likely be devoid of any protection. This serves two purposes:

1) a tactical option: go for the halfway platform to get a better line of sight, but you do not get any protection. Or you spend some extra time and movement to get to the top where you will benefit from cover.

2) When playing, I like to place wooden bridges and ladders to connect various buildings. It will be easier to do with an open platform.

The red planks are simply colored Popsicle sticks I got from the Dollar store.
