The Great Grey Massacre.
The Opening Gambit. Experimenting with Contrast Paints Part I.
Hello,
So this is a somewhat retrospective step however such is the nature of the anxiety beast it is somewhat surprising I have posted anything.
That aside I decided to experiment with the greens, browns and some random splashes of lighter and darker colours.
For that purpose I started with nine assorted Ork Zombies from Zombicide Green Horde which I purchased in September 2019 with a view to flesh out the Bestiary for Rangers of Shadows deep. These were all based on Poker chips. Plastic/clay compound with a metal insert. I have around two hundred 1’s and 2’s which myself and my friends no longer use and thus are satisfyingly weighty and are free and just taking up space.
Two Midlam Miniatures Zombie Halflings from last years Kickstarter.
Two Skinks free from White Dwarf way back back when the plastic Lizardmen were first released.
I believe these were all base coated Wraithbone as that is pushed for living or perhaps almost living things in this case.
In addition there are six Warlord Games US Infantry from a free sprue on Wargames Illustrated from at least a year ago. As I have no interest in World War II US Infantry, I acquired some Imperial Guard (I will never accept their new moniker) arms/weapons sprues. Using green stuff and Loctite Power Flex I turned them into the 82nd Voidborne. I do not suppose anyone knows if it is possible to get custom transfer/decals? These were base coated Greyseer to experiment with colder colours.
I also included at this stage some incidental pieces. Some bread, cheese, a sphere and some small cannon shot sculpted from green stuff. Some Warlord Ashigaru bullet boxes, a chest and cannon shot from the Warhammer 6th Edition box set. These were base coated on a varied basis for experimentation purposes.
The Chest was painted with a dark brown Contrast for the wood and more traditionally the metal trim was Scale Color Cobalt Alchemy. Washed with Scale Color Inktense Blue. Then given a highlight/tidy up with Cobalt Alchemy.
All the multi bases from the Test of Honour boxed set were painted Goblin Green (Coat d’Arms) as well at this stage.
Early Conclusions:
- A different style to the Mike Mcvey early GW aesethic I have attempted to paint and learn to paint my main models in. However fear of failure delays aside these really are quick to use.
- I like the combination of traditional techniques with Contrast paint with the chest.
- I am annoyed with the lack of consistency. Each paint seems to require its own technique and speed of application.
- That said especially with the Guardsmen I am very impressed. This is quite distressing as those stunning Team Yankee British are now looking even more tempting…
One must not regrow the plastic pile before it has been properly pruned!!!
