The First thing I’m going to buy are shelves.

There are loads on the market and some are made for gaming folks like you and me, but…………oh heck, darn are they expensive! They are lovely, and they come in all colours, are hugely versatile, in their own very professional padded bags are they look the dogs….. well let’s say they look great, but they will cost you either a kidney or a soul. So Im going for something cheaper, Im going for the KVISSLE Letter Tray form IKEA which cost £19, I’m actually buying 2 of these for those of you with pocket protectors keeping a tally, that £40.50 spent. I had a large hotdog meal whilst at Ikea for £2.50, I really don’t see how you can’t there amazing but I do think they make the drinks too fizzy on purpose.

Now, you will notice that the whole unit is made from metal, this is important as it allows magnets to stick to it. You will also notice that each shelf has cork stuck to it, this is not good as magnets down stick to that. You could always simply turn the shelves over; this would give you a metal top for the figures and cork lining to protect figures underneath. I did try this, and I didn’t like it for two reasons. Reason 1, the right angled bits you use to pull the shelf out now face down, this is no problem for pulling the drawers out but it limits access to the shelf underneath and often means removing 2 shelfs to access one, a pain ! Reason 2, some Minis will JUST fit under a shelf, but if you add the 2mm cork they JUST wont !

So you’re going to want to remove the cork right ? RIGHT ? good choice. I’ve read some people on the internet saying they just pulled the cork off in one go, I tried, it didn’t go well, it came off in bits and left sticky residue on the shelf. This is my technique for removing the cork easily.

Get a heat gun, the kind you use for removing pant off woodwork. Use this to warn the underside of the shelf and the cork will just pull off in one clean sheet. You could use a hair dryer but don’t hold it to close to the shelf or it will overheat and break, trust me it will and it hurts. If you are left with any sticky bits just use WD40 to clean them.
