The Battle of Maroneia
I played a game on Thursday with the new Boiotian League list using Thebes and Boiotians and boy are they hard. I played a 400 point (ish) game, I think is was about 407 point against generic Greek force and the forces play very well, very balanced and got the feeling that they were two different forces fighting.
We played the Take and Hold Scenario and set up 12″ away from the central objective so we could get into the fight quicker.
The Greek City State Lochos
Lochagos (leader) (heavy), Miltiades
Promachos (hero) (medium), Irenaeus
1 unit of Experienced Hoplites (heavy infantry)
1 unit of Hoplites (heavy infantry)
1 unit of Experienced Peripoloi (medium infantry)
2 units of Peripoloi (medium infantry)
1 unit of Pelastai (javelin armed medium infantry)
1 unit of Sphenonetai (slingers)
1 unit of Toxotai (archers)
plus 20 points in Gifts, to make them Heroic.
The Boiotian League Lochos
Boiotain Lochagos (leader) (heavy), Agaetos
Theban Sacred Band heroes (Heroes) (medium), Alkaios and Diodotus
1 unit of Theban Kadmeian Guard (medium infantry)
1 unit of Theban Sacred Band Hoplite (medium infantry)
1 unit of Theban Hoplites (heavy infantry)
2 units of Boiotian League Hamippoi (light cavalry)
2 units of Boiotian League Hoplites (medium infantry)
The Battle of Maroneia
The two forces line up against each other with the Greek putting there medium infantry into a Phalanx and advanced towards, took the centre objective with the aim to hold the position. The other objectives in the players areas were grabbed so at the end of the first phase the Greeks had control of two of the objectives.
The Boiotian force used their cavalry to manoeuvre on the flanks to take out the archers and slingers on the Greek’s flanks, firstly using their javelins and then charging in to finish them out in melee. These units, Hamippoi, are quite fast and nippy and can pack a punch but as quite weak in defence but I found them quite balanced.
The Theban Sacred Band Hoplites attacked the Greek phalanx, boasted by Boiotian Lochagos with the aim of pushing them off the objective. Theban Sacred Band Hoplites are hard and nearly smashed the phalanx, combination of lucky attack rolls and poor defence rolls, and the Boiotian Lochagos and the 1 unit of Theban Kadmeian Guard the phalanx broke but the individual units of Greeks with help of there Lochagos and Promachos they held onto the objective to the end and victory went to the Greeks.
