The Eighty Years War
Dutch infantry
New infantry for the Dutch. The arquebusier with a feather on his helmet and the armoured soldier with twohanded sword are from the Hospitaler set I reviewed earlier.
The flag is from Flags of War. They have a large range of Dutch flags for the Eighty Years War. These flags are bigger and a little to big for these miniatures, but I’ve put one on anyway.
I like the big fleg, shows he means business.
I always thought the early flags had orange in them instead of red, but I’m happy I looked it up. Never knew that the Red, White, Blue is the older one.
Loving the great sword. Do you know how much they were used during the 80 Years War? I know there was a strong tradition for greatswords in Iberia, but I think it was waning by this period…
Hi Lonkelo,
It’s orange all right. The photo isn’t very clear. Red came in use after the war.
Great swords indeed where largely out of use by this time. A handful of elite soldiers still used them. Probably bodyguards.
