Spent some time this evening mocking up a spiral stair case, should be simple but it makes my poor tiny brain hurt 🙁

Getting the right amount of rise based on the material thickness is weirdly tricky (for me anyway, im sure theres someone out there that will say “yeah, you just do it like this…”)

The cardboard im using here is the same thickness as the pink foam I’ll be using to create the proper staircase so gives me a good idea how to proceed

The stair case rises 70mm around 195 degrees, makes for a steep staircase but I'll cut some recesses into the real one so that the bases of minis will be able to be stood on the stairs. The stair case rises 70mm around 195 degrees, makes for a steep staircase but I'll cut some recesses into the real one so that the bases of minis will be able to be stood on the stairs.

So, thoughts so far?

How about using a bit of dowel or similar for a central pillar and use a thin strip of card or something under the step, leaving a little bit of an overhang. then you can space the steps vertically a little bit which will give you more space to make the individual steps bigger to accommodate the mini bases. I’m thinking like the little lip you would get on a wooden staircase where the underneath is boxed in. Hard to describe with text and also what do I know about building staircases? No idea if this’ll come out in text… Read more »
