Catastrophe Table

So when things go wrong they should really go wrong in magic.

The mage has pushed him/herself too far.  Tried to do too much.

I’d like the dice roll to be similar to the casting roll, so its a consistent mechanism.  Need to think about that a bit more.  But at the moment its modified based on the cost of the spell.

The Dice Roll should be modified say minus cost of spell / 3 rounding down.  Cheapest spell to attack enemy is 2.

Need to think about the order in the table a bit more and any other consequences that are fun.

D10 catastrophe table (so far):

1 (or less). Explodey Head – The Mage does not release the energy built up required for the spell.  He becomes the centre of the spell (Level = Total Cost)

2. For every force there is an equal and opposite force – spell goes off as normal but the Mage is unable to withstand the reaction force and is sent directly backwards.  Distance is the longest straight path of the spell from him as the focus.   If mage is pushed off the battlefield he’s assumed lost for the battle.  Mage takes damage from his unexpected trip.  Number of inches moved / 3 wounds.

3. Distraction – At a critical point in the spell the Mage gets distracted.  The spell goes off as planned but in a random direction.

4.  Overload – The Mage can’t control where he’s pulling in the energy from and how much.  Nearest friendly unit takes  damage as their energy is sucked from them (Level 3 attack no save). Spell goes off but with all elements Level+3.

5 – 6. It’s Just A Flesh Wound! – Spell Fails and Mage suffers 1 wound.

7 – 8. It’s a Damp Squib! – The spell goes off but with level -3 off all elements.  If that’s takes the level to 0 or less then the element fizzles out before it reaches target and does nothing.

9. – 10. Nothing – The Mage waves his hands to release the spell and nothing happens.

At the moment if you try and cast a cost 30 spell (~50% probability) and fail.  Then rolling on this Table with a -10 modifier. So, highest score is 0.  So head will explode.  Blast field would be a 30″ diameter ball of magical energy.
