Loyalties in the Horus Heresy aren’t as clear cut as it might at first seem. I’ve been a fan of the Iron Warriors since reading Angel Exterminatus. I wanted to game with a loyalist legion so when I read the snippets of background regarding Kyr Vhalen and the 77th Grand Battalion my mind was made up to do a loyalist force of Iron Warriors.

Kyr Vhalen was the Warsmith of the Iron Warriors 77th Grand Battalion, crusading far away from the main force in a region of the galaxy largely forgotten by the Great Crusade. The 77th were not aware of their Legion’s betrayal at the outset of the Horus Heresy and thus remained loyal to the Emperor. They engaged other traitors in the first battle of Paramar V.

The idea is to build an armoured recce force. This will be using the armoured spearhead rite of war which means all troops must start in vehicles, so fits nicely with the theme. At the moment I plan to run it with a Praetor and add Kyr Vhalen into the list after I’ve completed the 3000pts for this project.

Looking further ahead I would like to play out some Battle of Tallarn scenarios where I will be able to use parts of this IW force to represent the traitor force battling the Imperial Army on the planet during the HH. Being a tank and transport heavy force, this will fit in nicely with the tank theme of that battle.

I like the background, and how it is more about the army then them being stereotypical Iron Warriors, ie. all they ever do, will do or can do is siege: I like the Spearheard idea, that they have their own specialty, were elsewhere and are loyalist.
