This blog will be a place for me to post about my solo campaign I will be running in the tradition of solitaire wargaming. I will be playing Angel Squadron, a ragtag band of Rebels made up of volunteers from other squadrons to run interference in Imperial controlled space in an effort to put a strain on their resources.

I’ve really enjoyed the fan made systems for X-wing such as HotAC (Heroes of the Aturi Cluster) http://dockingbay416.com/campaign/ and the Galactic Civil War Campaign rules. HotAC has been limited for me really by the ship requirements but I hope to one day acquire all I need to run it fully. The Galactic Civil War rules by Reckon of Team Covenant was along the lines of what I wanted to achieve but was not set up for solitaire play.

I’m going to be using version 6.2.0 of the GCWC to setup this campaign based on the Babylon 5: A Call To Arms campaign system with the tag on of the Expansion Campaign Supplement of that system with my own houseruled variation to add progression and scaling.

As such I will start with Imperials already in control of all Strategic Targets. I will begin the campaign as purely hit and run style attacks not planning to take and hold the strategic targets straight away. This will be reflected in the system rules.

Recon and Strategic Points are taken from xp earned in mission multiplied by priority multiplier. (Priority is a concept from B5:ACTA usually associated with ship scale as well as size of force used but as X-Wing already has a good point scale for ships and size of forces I’ve adapted this system to reflect that.)

Scout: 25 Squad points modifier .25 times experience earned
Patrol: 50 Squad points modifier .5 times experience earned
Skirmish: 75 Squad points modifier .75 times experience earned
Raid: 100 Squad points modifier 1 times experience earned
Battle: 125 Squad points modifier 1.25 times experience earned
War: 150 Squad points modifier 1.5 times experience earned

Therefore in a basic scout mission, earning 8 xp for things such as kills and completing mission objectives will translate to 2 Recon points by multiplying 8 by .25. The xp earned isn’t used up however but can be spent on upgrades for the ships flown in line with the GCWC rules.

Recon actions are free
Strategic Action costs 30 Recon points
Establish Control action costs 40 Strategic Points
With control points, I can now earn fleet points for the location controlled.
For the purposes of this campaign, Recon actions will be capped at Patrol priority. Strategic Actions at Raid Priority. With Establish Control to War Priority.

I will be reporting the game and playing it from a casual narrative standpoint. Basically I’m just playing it for fun and won’t be sticking too rigidly to the campaign rules laid out by the GCWC. I will be putting narrative first in terms of the campaign so multiple operations will be happening per campaign turn and Imperial forces won’t be keeping track of fleet points and will be deemed to have unlimited resources whereas my rebels will be trying to be conservative with their supplies.

As I collect more ships, particularly for epic play, I will move towards taking and holding sectors and I plan on getting Imperial Assault to add an extra element to the Campaign later on as the Rebels hopefully gain a foothold and could carry out ground operations. As I acquire them, I hope to later incorporate Armada for much larger operations with Rebel reinforcements but X-wing would still play out as a special forces type mission engagement. I am considering also including some solitaire roleplay of Edge Of The Empire/Age Of Rebellion to get across narrative actions of espionage within the campaign as it escalates. But for now, simple humble beginnings will suffice, as well as not breaking my bank balance.

In my first few posts I will introduce Angel Squadron with a roster, a briefing for the first round, and lay out what the first few scenarios will be for the opening of this campaign.

I hope you enjoy reading, I for one am excited to have something to work towards and achieve as a solo X-wing player rather than battle after battle with no progression and being able to craft a story as I go.

This second link is awkward so I’ve posted my Google search. It’s the Libsyn pdf result for those interested.
