On the 140th Anniversary of the Battles of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift I took a company of the 6mm lads to visit Pte William Jones VC. One of the defenders of the Hospital he is buried in Philips Park Cemetery in Manchester (you can also find 2 survivors of the Charge of the Light Brigade buried in the same cemetery).

Famously portrayed in the film ‘Zulu’ by Welsh actor Richard Davies, William Jones VC was in fact born in Bristol with his attestation papers showing his place of birth (or maybe registration of birth) as Evesham in Worcestershire.  Forced to sell his medal to support his family he died in poverty but is not forgotten..  there was valour on both sides that day…
