Kings of War Empire of Dust Army Build
First model fully painted
So after cleaning just a couple of mold lines that was enough for me and I decided to test the colour scheme on a complete model.
Unsure if it would be something I liked or not I selected one of my catapult crew. With just the right amount of Empire of Dust parts for my force I didn’t want to risk one of them.
So having prepared the model using the usual spray black, then a spray white zenith I settled into my process. I really like the army box colour scheme so will be sticking close to that.
The colours I used on each area were:-
1. Steel Legion Drab (GW), all the exposed bones and belts.
2. Ash Grey (AP), bandages, the stone tablet and the bases edge.
3. Crystal Blue (AP), hanging cloth and shirt
4. Matt White (AP), shirt collar and the bases skull. On the bones after the wash and skeleton bone highlight I then did a final of matt white.
5. Gun Metal (AP), chainmail, sword and helmet.
6. Shining Silver (AP), the buckles and alternate chainmail links after the wash.
7. Skeleton Bone (AP), the bases sand. To apply the first highlight after the bones have been washed.
8. Weapon Bronze (AP), hilt and crossguard.
9. Dark Tone (AP), the whole model and base.
The gallery above shows the steps I took.
I painted all the above colours to the listed areas as a flat colour.
I then washed the model in dark tone using my brush to coat everything but concentrating on the recesses and removing excess from the raised surfaces.
Using the wash as a reference I then used the original flat colours to highlight the model. The only slight changes are that I used the gun metal on the darker/shadowed side of the sword blade and shining silver on the high side/lit part of the blade. I alternated these two colours on the rows of chainmail to give it a shimmer. Also I brought up the bone from steel legion drab, dark tone wash, then skeleton bone (highlight) and finally a matt white (highlight).
I am very happy with the results and with the short amount of time it took me to achieve the final look. I believe this is a viable colour scheme to paint my army to a good tabletop standard without taking too long.
Some changes mistakes I made, the stone tablet I changed from steel legion drab to ash grey as I wanted more of a stone look. I also changed the bone process so it started with steel legion drab, then was washed with dark tone, then a skeleton bone highlight with a final matt white highlight. This gave me the heavily exposed sun bleached bone final look I wanted that contrasts nicely with the sand of the bases.
One final thing I would like to try is some desert weathering pigment on the bases and lowest part of the model. I will carry this out on a single painted base which I have spare to test the process and final look.
Cheers for reading and have a good week.
