This is my journey into Mortal Gods and even though the actually game isn’t out yet I have decided that I will start building my army/force/Lochos (war band) using the bases that Sarissa and War Banner do and a couple of boxes, okay three boxes of Victrix plastic Greeks.

The boxes I have used from Victrix are Mercenary Armoured Hoplites, Greek Unarmoured Hoplites and Greek Peltasts, Javelin Men and Slingers. I have more than enough to make a Lochos and will start with one force and build a second once this one is finished.

The nice thing is that the figures that I have brought are the same as the ones which will come in the core set, just less of them. The plastics that Victrix make are actually very nice and lots of options without making it to complex or confusing to build.

So this is going to be my journey is Mortal Gods, Greeks and Ancients.

Mortal Gods is a skirmish tabletop game played with roughly 15-25 models on each side. Players select their warriors before each game based around a single heroic leader, or ‘Lochagos’, and a number of loyal companions and heroes forming a single Lochos (war band).

Battles are swift and bloody as players alternate acting with one warrior or a group of warriors – moving and fighting to achieve the scenario objectives, whether that be cutting down the enemy, defending an outpost or finding and protecting an important character.

I have to say that I know very little about Greeks, Romans or ancients come to think about it other than from films and what I read at school. So this is a learning journey for me too to find out more the different types and names of Greeks mean.

The game basically is based around a leader and Hoplites, large shield carrying, spear armed soldiers. Now these can wearing armour or unarmoured but these are the back bone of your war band. These use a triangular group base so they can “Form Up” and fight as a Phalanx, the classic image of Greeks fighting.

These are supports by archers, slingers,  javelin men and Peltast, collective known as Psiloi, light infantry who acted as skirmishers and missile troops. These use a round group base and I will explain more about the bases and troop types as I go along.
