Interactive tabletop playing surface (Space Hulk Hobby Challenge)
Let's call it done.
Of course there are a hundred and one things I’d still like to do – and maybe, before the end of the year, I might just.
The audio leaves a lot to be desired (though it was only added as a last-minute thing because “hey, wouldn’t it be cool to add some atmosphere with some CB radio chatter?”). There are not victory conditions – the game just plays until the alien player decides to stop spawning Genestealers (and when the Marines are wiped out, there’s not much they can do except end each turn!).
But functionally?
Well, it’s a working game. It puts your tabletop miniatures onto a tablet. And it lets you play against opponents over the internet!
So while not every target was smashed in time for the end-of-competition deadline, I reckon there’s enough to say “I’m done”….. for now 😉
Bravo. A damn fine project to give long distance gamers the chance to play against each other. More and more things for augmented reality.
When I first moved over to Unity (originally I’d planned on writing the app in Flash/Adobe Animate) a few people suggested augmented reality. I’m not entirely convinced on it. My ideal app interface would be an entirely blank screen. Audio cues are important, but I wanted the focus to be on the tabletop, not on the screen. Augmented reality takes your focus off the tabletop and puts it squarely onto a 4″ screen which, personally, I feel spoils rather than enhances the gaming experience. My focus was on functionality, and being able to play (and replay) turns against a remote… Read more »
Hey I got a promotion! Well done on getting this done.
I was playing about with the idea of campaign games – where characters earn VPs which can be spent on up-skilling (is that a word?) characters for future games. I forgot to reset the online character sheets. I’ll sack the continunity editor to make sure it never happens again, don’t you worry. While it’s “done enough” to be playable, there’s obviously loads more stuff I want to do with it; already had enquiries about Kickstarter – but it’d be a far bigger project than just one person could deal with! I’ve already got plans to resurrect digital Blood Bowl in… Read more »
This is amazing, I love the concept and your explaination of it all.
