Priming, crackle basing and using shades.

I primed the whole batch with skeleton bone Army Painter spray.

After the assembly of the minis I added some crackle paste to the base. Once dried I then primed them.

Sadly this hasn’t crackled or adhered to the base as I had hoped. I have learned since that for best results you should use some gloss varnish on the base before you add the paste. Time again I am sure it will look better. I have applied a covering of pva to try to stabilise the crackle surface. I have painted over much of the effect with vallejo new wood and agrax earthshade. I have added a touch of sand too.

The heads are being painted with Bugman’s Glow because I thought the purple was too harsh a colour for what I wanted. The sinews and gory bits have been painted with Citadel technical paint Blood for the Blood God.

On the back of the head and neck I have really enjoyed putting in free hand veins to give it an even more alien feel.

I have used dots of white, Druchii Violet and Drakenhof Nightshade (blue) to give some interesting texture to the hardened shell areas of the genestealer and the skin. Just using a thin highlight brush and pooling little dots and allowing them to dry down to a interesting dots gave me the effect I wanted.

I also used Reikland Fleshshade wash over all the purple and Bugman’s Glow and even most of the bone. I then went over the bone again with a light shade of agrax earthshade. I built the bone back up with Zandri Dust and highlighted in white.
