My first project - Vikings
Weekend work
I didn’t get quite as much done as I hoped to over the weekend but still making progress.
I did buy a lamp over the weekend which is the best and worst thing I’ve done so far. I can now see a lot clearer when painting however the down side is I can now see additional imperfections!
I also went back and tried the technique suggested by @avernos with fur. I had tried the base of werewolf with dry brush of banshee brown previously however didn’t have much success. The more I thought about it, the more I realised it was probably user error as oppose to the technique not working.
I therefore went for a heavier dry brush which seems to have worked out. However, before the wash, I did manage to make my viking look a little like Fred Flinstone!
I wanted to upload my WIP to keep me on track!
P.S again, thank you to everyone who has taken the time to give me hints and tips along the way, I am so grateful!
Cheers!
that’s looking well, what do you think of the fur yourself are you happy with how it turned out and can you see much of an improvement?
I quite like it especially as a variation when there are a few models with fur. I think next time I would probably do a selective heavier dry bush – say down the centre of the model with darker round the edges. I’ve tried a few different techniques and I definitely think the most effective is a variation of colour throughout the fur. I was considering going back over this fur with the wash and leaving almost an oval around the neck line without the second wash. Should give a little variation in the colour but it looks okay and… Read more »
if you want I can do a quick video on how I do it and throw it up for you

feel free to skip the rambling bits, it’s rough and ready, but it will give you the basics you need
Just had a look. That’s really helpful thanks a lot – I really appreciate it.
I have fur which is of a similar texture in my next batch to paint so will try it out!
just don’t get impatient and hit it with a hair dryer and you’ll be grand 😉
@ragnar08 – Great to see more historical minis and projects in this part of the site – you know I scrolled through the Projects today and only saw 3 projects on the first page that could be considered historical. You’re one of the few “holding the line!” Great job! Keep it up!
Thanks! The historical element is something which really appealed to me getting into the hobby so I am always happy when I see some pop up!
