Landships ahoy!

So a couple of months ago I was watching an episode of Tested on youtube (you should check it out if you haven’t seen it) and they mentioned something called tinkercad. Turns out it’s a browser based CAD program that’s free to use.

Free… able to run on my potato/computer… Naturally I had to check it out.

Turns out the way it works is very similar to unreal edit, which I spent a good chunk of my teenage years playing around with, so after a week or two I’d quickly got the hang of it.

Now a week or two before this discovery I’d had an idea for a game – walking battleships fighting martian tripods, and with it very fresh in my mind It made sense that this was the first thing I made digitally.

I first made the small landship, then decided it needed a multi turreted bigger friend. I’m thinking I’ll make a larger, six legged one eventually.

6mm Scale felt right for them. I wanted the tripods to be massive but small enough to not cost an arm and a leg once I got around to making them. At this size they’ll end up about 70mm tall.

Speaking of tripods…

I very much wanted a balance between war machine and alien monster, so I designed the cockpit to slightly resemble a screaming face with an elephant trunk.

In the mean time Rob at Hysterical Games sent me a test print of the first turret I made. I was instantly hooked. It was so small and awesome!

I also had a crack at some scrapbots as I was working on a robot commission for Jamie (who lives down the road and runs Old School Miniatures) He then decided to treat himself to a couple of 3d printers!

And Jamie, being a legend, insisted he’d print anything I sent him. Good practice for both of us, and really exciting. It wasn’t long before I got a box of goodies.

They look awesome. I love the screaming tripod, the elephant trunk is a nice nod to the sound of the tripods in the Speilberg’s War of the Worlds. The painted landship looks great too, I’m looking forward to seeing more of these.
