Turns out you really can mess up the drill and broom method, so heres another alternative.
Drain pipe cleaner, on offer at wickes it works out a similar price to broom heads
You'll need to trim your way towards the wire before cutting with pliers, we found if you use 2 pairs to untwist the area your snipping its easier to cut

@kingandcountry looking good, i did my trees the same way, be sure to glue the top and bottom of the tree as the wire has a habit of coming loose and then all the strands fall off! Also when you flock it, try and seal the flock with something otherwise (again like me) you’ll have flock falling off everywhere.
Im enjoying the project and hope the new recruits to the hobby are having fun too, BA was a great choice for an intro game.
@civilcourage thanks for the advice, any recommendations on sealant?
I used some spray varnish but cant say i have mastered the process yet.
