MH-6 Little Conversion
Starting Point and History
Looking to create a representation of the MH6 Little Bird for my modern military gaming. Just to add some additional flavor for my spec operators hitting the battlefield.
Some of you might recognize the name of the vehicle as it gained notoriety during Operation Gothic Serpent (Blackhawk Down).
MH-6 Little Birds were part of the initial assault near the Olympic Hotel in the Bakara Market of Mogadishu, Somalia. The MH-6s conducted rooftop insertions of Delta Force soldiers.
After the shootdown of the MH-60L, call sign “Super Six-One”, by a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG), an MH-6 Little Bird, call sign “Star Four-One”, piloted by CW4 Keith Jones and CW3 Karl Maier, landed in the street next to the downed MH-60 and attempted to evacuate the casualties. Jones went to assist survivors, successfully pulling two soldiers into the Little Bird, while Maier laid down suppressive fire from the cockpit with his individual weapon. Under intense ground fire, the MH-6 departed with its crew and survivors.
During the night, AH-6J gunships provided fire support to Rangers and Delta Force operators who were in defensive positions around the crash site of “Super 6-1” and under constant fire from Warlord Mohammad Farrah Aidid’s militia members.
Staring point for this was to locate a kit that is easy to build and modify for the purposes of the idea which was to create a terrain piece or objective marker for the table top.
Doing some research and looking at costs I picked up two of the Academy 1/48 scale Tow Defender 500D kits. They were purchased off eBay for under £10 and are perfect for the project, additional for some of the conversion bits I got some 2mm plastic card and some 1mm plastic tube.
Once built I’ll be looking at basing options with clear perspex rods, I’m looking at using magnetics for the rotators for easy storage and transport.
