Irregular Magazine Re-Design
Designing a Cover
To design a magazine cover you need to remember the two key objectives: to express the theme or content of the magazine and attract the attention of a prospective readers.
The magazine cover page should achieve both key objectives and will remarkably increase the odds of the final objective – an increase in readership.
The first thing you need to do to start your magazine cover design will be to study your competition, looks the design style and aim to improve on that style and design.
Create a magazine cover design that will catch attention by being prominent or extreme, unusual, a cover that will stand out on the magazine rack. Your magazine cover design should be directly connected to the main subject and topics approached in the magazine issue. On Irregular magazine we always use a prominent piece of artwork, and on occasion this has been directly commissioned for that issue. Our aim originally was to emulate the gaming magazines of the early 80’s who regularly featured artwork on the covers.
Try and stay consistent with the design of the cover so that its recognisable to your readership, the magazine logo is an important aspect of the design, and this should stay consistent on every issue, as this is your brand identity.
Our logo was created by a designer in Sheffield, Matt Mella, who gave us a clean look that we’ve kept for the last 9 years.
