Oriskany's 28mm Long Range Desert Group
A little more progress ...
Little more progress on the LRDG. Now with 16 men instead of 8, plus 6 crew in the two vehicles. Far, far happier with how the men are turning out so far rather than the vehicles, I seem to have a lot more work ahead of me on them.
These are coming on great so far! How’re you finding it?
The troops not too bad, actually like the larger scale, easier on my eyes. Also getting the hang of thin coats to change color via filter painting. The trucks, however, continue to fight me tooth and nail. Nothing wrong with the kits, just some bad luck with the primer – difficulty of lighter colors, and my own inexperience.
They are looking solid now. I’ve found with desert less is more, as the wear and tear is quite subtle generally, especially on stuff like the LRDG trucks. If you can get it, and I think it’s sold on Amazon, get some AK Interactive dust and dirt deposits, light dust. It’s an enamel based wash, but is very easy to work with, and you have time to work it with just some white spirit. When it dries it looks just like real dust I tend to let that do most of the talking now with North Africa models.
I second the AK stuff, I use the Africa Dust effects wash, dip the brush, slap it around on the model, leave to dry, perfect looking layer of desert dust.

It’s a bit pricey, but for the pain it saves, I don’t mind paying it.
Definite improvement.
How about a dry brush of base-coat mixed with a touch of white on the vehicle upper surfaces to add that ‘sun bleached’ look?
Also Jim, could you check your PMs please, I tried to send you a message about some LRDG references but I don’t know if my PM thing is working? ta.
Thanks, @damon – yes, I am totally looking forward to some pretty significant drybrushing on this, not only to bring out its detail and add a “desert effect,” but also to cover still more issues and mistakes.
Yes, I see your PM and have responded. 😀 Apologies I didn’t do so earlier, until we get to actual Boot Camp, it’s only going to get busier from here. 😀
