Oriskany's 28mm Long Range Desert Group
A ray of hope ...
Okay, I think this is slowly inching back from the abyss …
Some salvage work done to smooth out the worst of the block coloring.
And wow! Huge thanks to everyone for all the supportive and encouraging comments!
Also, as fate would have it, my second batch of eight SAS / LRDG troops arrived in the post, started on them, different primer (lighter color in front) went down much better.
Actually none of the troops are that bad, at least not for the stage they’re at now – but the vehicles were less than pristine with the primer. The block colors are mostly down (yes, that borderline pink is intentional – that’s not the issue) – it just didn’t go down very smoothly over the “grainy” primer ever after I sanded and smoothed out and re-painted as best I could.
I suppose I can cover it with desert sand, dust, and grime, or as a last resort, battle damage.
Also, photographing in better light seems to have helped!
In all, this is just one of those things I really wanted to do. Admittedly, it’s not strictly necessary for the Boot Camp, but when your prospects for its accomplishment come under threat because of a cheap can of primer, then you go to fix it with your air brush only to find that the hose somehow got uprooted and torn right out the compressor somehow, then the camera screws up, then the manual painting doesn’t go terribly well, then then then then then …
It was just a day of “rolling all 1s” is all. 🙁
But, like I said, things seem to be going a little better today.
First off, I’m posting my thanks to everyone here so I can tag everyone …
@gladesrunner – thanks for putting up with me when projects start to go bad or, even worse, feel useless.
@dignity – thanks for the tips, totally taking your advice on the the “fail fast” and “wash then re-lighten” block colors. This is my usual technique for 15mm, I just didn’t really think it would pass on 28mm. Like I said, these are my first 28mm figures.
@figure11 – thanks, definitely making another shove to rescue this project today.
@torros – thank you, sir … did use some stripper and an electric toothbrush on the VERY worst parts yesterday, wound up having to scrape off the paint. Then patched it with many VERY thin coats to smooth it out. Also saved the particular paint mixture in an old bottle so I can easily “match-and-patch” many more pad spots later. I will definitely take your advice on the brown wash. I have a great Vallejo wash set I use, I’ll thin it down a bit as Vallejo washes (especially darker colors) I have noticed go down quite thick. Normally not… Read more »
Yes, @damon , there is very much a very big deadline. I was really hoping to get this force at least semi-prepared for the boot camp. No way in hell I’m bringing these suckers on a plane (I brought a metal miniature army on a plane once, never going through that again – security gets VEEEEEERY curious when they see all these off metal bits in your carry on X-ray). So I was thinking of shipping it ahead of me to the BoW studios. I’m asking gladesrunner (Jennifer) to investigate the absolute fastest, cost-is-no-object shipping options to get this to… Read more »
