Was sent this bust by Iter Miniatures a wee while ago and after a bit false start where I went with a more traditional green, I dumped her to the back of my WiPping shelf for over a month. Then out of the blue (geddit?!….no ….. Bueller…..Bueller….. ok. Shup Jan ) one day I decided to go a differnt way and with a totally different palette. As soon as the green was totally erased and painted over with new base coat (Bering Blue from ScaleColour btw) I was sucked in and so much happier

I started imagining a background in my head of an Ice Gobliness from the frozen wastes to the north. North of where?? Just north….0k??!!!! The story grew and grew as I painted more. Her dress I decided would be leather with a thick fur collar. Some animal she had hunted down. Her hair pins were already bone but her ear rings I decided would be made of bone for the most part. I wanted a cool cool skin palette but then a more warm palette for her clothing. The leather is a very easy work up  – building up medium glazes over a dark lateral prehighlight.

Started working up the fur collar as well wet blending from dubai brown > iroko > birch (all Scalecolour) wet blending fur with loadsa spikey bits n textures is a pain in the…..brush 😉 The started to work some highlights into the base skin tone by adding a little mojave white into the bering blue. With that all done next came the lips (added a little fuschia into the base tone) then more skin refinement and then the eyes which by some miracle i managed to get done first go and in about 10 mins. I’m now scared to go anywherenear them in case I muck them up!

Tattoos – I wanted some tattoos on her to go with the whole theme. After a lot of googling and looking about I came across some old old pics of Inuit women from northern canada and BOOM  – the perfect tattoo designs for Zayna. So I started ‘penciling’ them i.

Which finally brings us to where i am this morning. have just done a little more skin refinement after finishing the tatts and glazing in some stronger shadows on the right side of her face to increase volume. A very thin glaze of gobi brown. veeeeeeeeeeeeeeeery thin. to give her a little eye shadow and a slightly different tone to the rest of her skin and we are nearly ready to tackle the hair 🙂
