Painting up Mansions of Madness
Chthonians
I do try to make these monsters as close to the description from the mythos as possible. The Chthonians are described as
Flowing tentacles and pulpy gray-black, elongated sack of a body…no distinguishing features at all other than the reaching, groping tentacles. Or was there—yes—a lump in the upper body of the thing…a container of sorts for the brain, basal ganglia, or whichever diseased organ governed this horror’s loathsome life!
—Brian Lumley, The Burrowers Beneath
I started with a base coat of Mechanicus Standard Grey for the body, Pink Horror for the tentacles, and Dryad Bark for the dirt. Then I washed the body with Nuln Oil to blacken the grey. Finally, I washed the whole miniature with Agrax Earthshade, to give it shade and an earthy look.
Then for some drybrushing and highlights.
The body was simply drybrushed very lightly with Dawnstone, while the dirt was drybrushed with Gorthor Brown.
The tentacles were brightened up from the wash with Pink Horror, then transitioned with Emperor’s Children and finally a slightly watered-down Fulgrim Pink. The suckers were just drybrushed with Fulgrim Pink.
The miniature was finally super glued on the base.
Beautifully creepy result.
