World Of Darkness Resurrect Two Haunting TTRPG Titles
October 15, 2021 by fcostin
There have been some incredibly interesting movements this October, with some scary announcements made across miniatures, cards and board games this Spooky Season.
Brand Update - Werewolf: The Apocalypse & Hunter: The Reckoning // World of Darkness
Celebrating 'Month of Darkness', World of Darkness has come forward with an announcement, resurrecting two titles from White Wolf into a new edition. Werewolf: The Apocalypse and Hunter: The Reckoning will be making a return to the tabletop, with updates into their 5th Edition of the game systems.
Hunter: The Reckoning (1999) // White Wolf
Returning to the tabletop first brings Hunter: The Reckoning in its fifth edition, puts players in a world where they are hunting the more fearsome of creatures that come out to play when it is dark. Yet this does not mean that humanity is closing to extinction - changing the world for the greater good against all things evil:
“Hunter: The Reckoning is unique in the World of Darkness in that it gives hope to humanity. Hunters are fighting back against the terrors that go bump in the night, giving humanity a fighting chance against impossible odds. Hunters also position themselves in opposition to larger hunting orgs, which are often the tools of an unjust status quo. Working on Hunter helps realize the aspirational element of the World of Darkness, that the things you do can change the world for the better.”
Werewolf: The Apocalypse (2004) // White Wolf
A little later on the timeline will bring Werewolf: The Apocalypse, a storytelling game where players will be encouraged to explore the environmental apocalypse on earth as werewolves, coming across a plethora of different enemies to take down and progress through civilisation.
"The Apocalypse as we are envisioning it today is a storytelling game about radical solutions that explore an environmental apocalypse where a range of injustices provoke urgency and violence. It’s a game about tearing apart your enemies… and living with the repercussions. It also is a game that explores the differences between people and the mutual sacrifices made to effect — or endure — global consequences."
Notably, the home of Vampire: The Masquerade - World of Darkness have promised to share more information about the upcoming projects over the course of October as part of 'Month of Darkness', including previews and a peek into the future of the game systems.
Have you played Werewolf: The Apocalypse or Hunter: The Reckoning before? Will you be intrigued to pick up the new edition when it is released?

Werewolf the Apocalypse would be quite topical nowadays. We could do with some werewolves kicking the ass of some of the climate change action shirkers and deniers.
Ooh its underworld meets Greta Thunberg meets the walking dead.
You do know that Greta is working for Pentex ? 😉
Lol.
Since when was ‘World of Darkness’ ever about doing ‘good’ ?
There never are any ‘good’ guys in that series.
Time to remind folk that werewolves once hunted humanity … and they were responsible for the genocide of several werefolk.
At best you’re trying to hold back the monster inside and hold on to what little humanity you’ve got left.
It’s in the title : “World of Darkness” …
There is no hope. You just hang on to every tiny bit of light for as long as you can until the inevitable end.
Werewolf is not a new announcement, as it was in the works earlier in the year with Hunter Entertainment – just that it is now being developed in-house by Paradox.
Also the other big news is that Vampire the Masquerade 5th edition community content is now an option – I just published 2 products on the Storyteller Vault for that.
As for Hunter – I suspect Reckoning will borrow heavily from the more successful Chronicles of Darkness version, Hunter the Vigil.
I hope not. Like most of the NWOD, Vigil turned into politicking real fast, which I would expect from Vampire and a bit of Werewolf but not Hunter (or Mage for that matter). Hunter the Reckoning on the other hand hopefully stays true to it’s hard scrabble roots. Everyday people randomly gifted with the abilities to combat the supernatural.
Huge werewolves the apoc fan here, basically my entire teenage years were spent in that world.
Werewolves are so powerful in the WoD universe, its not even funny. The shear amount of damage dealing and destruction they can dish out is just not something that 5e can handle, in my opinion.
The combat mechanics and shear viseral bloody action is just not something that Hitpoints and a d20 can really capture. End of story.
I just do not see me even remotely interested in this.
After listening to the video, it’s not being changed to 5th ED D&D. It’s going to be the 5th edition of the game with changes. Some of the changes have me very skeptical, they got rid of metis and the litany. Tribes are not restricted by culture or heritage either. Hunter sounds like a mix between Vigil and Reckoning, Hunters are still small groups of normal people but they aren’t imbued anymore, they do have edges though. I think change is good but I’m leery of the way they are changes these two gems.
