Wizards Give First Look At Magic & Warhammer 40K Crossover Sets

Wizards Of The Coast has started previewing some of the upcoming Warhammer 40,000 Magic: The Gathering decks that are releasing later this year in August. Bring the various factions of the grimdark future to the tabletop in card game form.
The Ruinous Powers Commander Deck // Magic: The Gathering
Four Commander Decks are going to be released in Mid-August featuring artwork from the expansive Warhammer 40,000 world. Each deck is going to be ready-to-play and focuses in on the Commander format which allows for big, powerful characters and creatures and the option to dive into multiplayer games.
Forces Of The Imperium Commander Deck // Magic: The Gathering
Each of the decks focuses on the classic colour combinations present in Magic: The Gathering. The Ruinous Powers deck focuses in on blue, black and red. The Forces Of The Imperium introduces white, blue and black.
The two Xenos decks that will be released initially feature the Necron Dynasties which is a mono-black deck and finally, the Tyranid Swarm which brings the trio of green, blue and red into the mix.

The Collector's Edition sets for these decks come with unique "Universes Beyond" frames but are essentially the same decks. If you're eager to get something a little more special then maybe they could be for you.

I would hope that if these decks do well, they might start to expand the options available to players. The Aeldari and the Orks are conspicuously absent from this initial set of releases and I know a fair few folks who would have wanted to snap those up. It looks like the Space Marines, at least for now, are going to be serviced by the Forces Of The Imperium deck.
There are going to be additional releases alongside these decks. Three Secret Lair releases will be following in their wake looking at the Orks, Warhammer Age Of Sigmar and Blood Bowl. So, Fantasy and Fantasy Football are going to be catered for!
Could you be tempted to give these Commander Decks a shot? I like that they are focused on offering everything in one pack, allowing you to just pick up one of these sets and dive in.
Which set would you pick?

I rather like revealed squat mechanic. It has so much flavor.
Amusing that WOTC is debuting the concept of “Collector’s Edition” Commander Decks with the 40k product. As if they asked themselves, “Hmm… what other geek IP is willing to severely overpay for just about everything? Ah… the Games Workshop fans!”
Regular 40k Commander Decks = $50 each
“Collector’s Edition” 40k Commander decks in fancypants new foil = $100 each
WotC and GW are a match made in heaven. They must have toasted to there upcoming success the moment they light bulb went off over their heads, their eyes meeting across the table…. love at first sight… of dollar signs. So many dollar signs.
WotC has been focusing on whales for years so that’s nothing new from them.
Should be good for player’s the marine’s are a swords tip for surgical strikes that other imperial force’s struggle to win against so hardly used as a first step in reality.
Memories of the 1990s GW mail order knitting circle saying John Stallard was in the boardroom ripping up Magic cards shouting “Heresy! Heresy!” (between the lines someone’s making money off this and it’s not us). True or not we loved John for it.
Has Magic lately been centered around theme? M82 mentions a squat mechanic, and I remember old releases of Magic when you sacrificed a Goblin for some effect. And, I guess, GW hasn’t been successful with its CCG’s (I owned two of them which are now dead) so, sure, Magic. With FFG and other companies, GW has licensed their IP to various non-miniature boardgames, so I guess it’s Magic’s turn.
Never thought I’d see magic crossover with 40k.
