Osprey Games has now released their new set of Ancient wargaming rules by Eric Farrington, Wars Of The Republic. Will you play as the mighty armies of Rome or their enemies at the edges of their empire?
Wars Of The Republic // Osprey Games
Wars Of The Republic covers the period between 343 and 350 BC and has you campaigning with a legion of Rome's finest. You'll find all of the rules within for fighting as the varied and changing Roman army as well as their opponents, the Gauls, Italians, Carthaginians, Iberians and Greeks.
The game has been designed for 28mm miniatures but it could easily be scaled up or down depending on your preferences. It uses a d6 system but also has some nifty elements like Commander's Gaze which is integral to the way you control and manage the battlefield.
You'll also find historical scenarios within which are great for getting you started, ways to add complications and narrative for your battles and also a campaign system too. Coming in at under seventy pages, it's a pretty quick and easy set of rules to get your head around.
Are you going to be checking this out?

No pew pew pew so I’m out.
I guess a pilum is an old fashioned, very long, wooden pew pew.
Especially if you take it right to the heart!
Lol they did have slings? Me thinks for stones throwing Ben.
they fired lead bullets
So it was lead poisoning that killed goliath then?
Love the blue books. And, I’m curious about “commander’s gaze” …
I am endeavouring to explore it in more detail for folks in the next couple of weeks so watch this space.
CG is really good, I like the options it opens up to players
Interesting. Any idea of the scale of actions? Are we talking a handful of minis? A few dozen? Hundreds?
Blue books are always worth a look though, tempted. Damn you shiny syndrome!
According to the book around 10 28mm models to represent a unit of infantry or cavalry (ranks of 5). So, it can be quite big or small depending on how you want to play it. They also encourage multi-basing etc as long as you have a way to represent the different unit formations.
Cheers. Multi-basing certainly implies larger actions.
Should have a copy arriving today, looking forward to checking it out.
The Republican era has so much going for it, a lot more contenders for power in the region, some interesting civil wars, the carthaginians and lets not forget the phyric war.
Great to see it getting some love and attention.
