March 17, 2017 by brennon
If you've been interested in following Test Of Honour, the new Samurai miniatures game from Warlord Games, then you might want to check out this slice of gameplay which popped up on Youtube from the team.
Right now you can still pre-order the game from over on their webstore as well as a range of different pieces of terrain with which you can build a board worthy of your honourable warriors. Check out the gameplay video above and see whether or not this game appeals to you.

Warlord have sold out of pre-orders as of today. So maybe try local retailers instead to pre-order.
This game continues to intrigue, so I will definately give the video a watch later on in the evening. Good to hear Warlord sold out … It sends them a positive message
Already pre-ordered the mega bundle. I was sold the second I heard the word samurai.
A video that has me wondering about the game mechanics. Not sure about the dicebag mechanic in this gameplay and do they have to attack the nearest model or was that just how they played this one out.
I raised an eyebrow at the drawing which model goes next (as opposed to which side in the dice bag mechanic in Bolt Action and BGoA) – is this a bit too random?
If they genuinely do have to attack the nearest model, pretty much everything is decided by drawing the counters; barely any interaction, barely any decisions from the players, who almost just push models around according to the dice bag.
If this interpretation is right, this game will need a bit of house-ruling to get the players more involved.
Agreed buddy I found BA frustrating as troops wouldn’t react to enemy fire and often get wiped out or become an ineffective force without me being to do anything about it. This seems to take that even further but will look for full game videos as this may just be a much simplified demo version.
I love that side of BA – the troops acting like humans (albeit trained humans) under fire, rather than robots.
I think you’re right not to jump to conclusions on Test of Honour, and I’ll also wait for a proper look at this one.
I actually think they act the opposite dude, they act like robots by not doing anything while they are being taken out. But that’s a discussion for another thread 🙂
The only thing that stop troops reacting is if they have already acted. What your describing sounds like a visualisation issue, so you troops have advanced for example come under fire then get gunned down by x squads, where as to me they rush forward fire and multiple enemies return fire simultaneously giving no time to react. In effect although the turn splits into activation sequences, it all happens in a few seconds.
I understand what your saying buddy. Having a unit who hasn’t activated in a perfect firing position watch an enemy unit run across the open ground in front of them without firing and make it into cover makes no sense to me. I think it’s just very tough to put together a set of rules for realistic warfare.
Agree on that, its all an abstraction.
Most of the rules are free to download it seems

You have to shoot or melee the closest target, unless you make a free “wits” roll to target or charge any other target of your choice. they is a good 1 hour 18 minute video on yourtube which is a good example of game being played…
@soulman cheers for the link will give it a look.
Thanks for clearing that up *thumbs up*
The idea of this game and genre excites me but that video was bland as fuck! The chit drawing system seems horribly random, but I’ll give it a shot.
Full game….

Meant to say thanks for the info but now thanks for the link hehe
I have pre-ordered, I wonder if they will let me pick up at Adepticon and then we can get in a proper review. Otherwise I can film a demo with them there.
Would be great
amazing box art and i’m a sucker for the setting. but like others here i’m not a fan of the out the bag activation mechanic.
I am, prefer games where you don’t have complete robotic control of your forces, all the drawing out of the hat really means is that you may have to activate one type instead of another or turn end, it’s not a drastic loss of command.
standard foot soldiers have 1 activation but samurai have 2-3 per man. so its about when pick which to act…you could have a mounted samurai charge off leaving the rest behind.! and also the critical 5 sword results could give you a free “charge” into another unit within 6″… its going to be bloody on the battlefield next week…
But that additional charge would have to be into the closest unit? Even if another one made more sense but was in range although not the closest.
Not necessarily, you can make a test not to attack the closest threat.
Initially not bother by this, but models really appeal and its so reasonably price. Think I’d want a demo first though.
Pity its not available without the minis (already have some Perry minis, and not a fan of the Wargame Factory’s plastics). However Warlord sell minis, so its not in their interest to sell it in that format 🙁
Anyone thought about trying the torii rules from kensei? Zentit made a skirmish ruleset to go with their great models.
Having now read the rules to this I know its not a game for me. If others enjoy it I am glad. This is just my opinion. I love the setting just not the rules. Way to auto play for my liking. Having to charge the nearest enemy unless you pass a wits test, plus random activations and not being able to chose whether to save your action or use it to make a avoid role takes a lot of tactical choices out of the game. The wits roll requires you to get 3 Swords and for a commoner unit… Read more »
This game is piquing my interest 🙂
I’ve ordered the full bundle, which is apparently on it’s way right now. I’ve had a look through this in the Warlord store, and what I really liked was the plot arc of the scenarios, where each one significantly affects the next to tell a story. Really great stuff and looking forward to giving it a go.
