Warhammer Underworlds News & Khorne Warriors Book Coming Soon
March 20, 2017 by brennon
Games Workshop has dropped a few more hints about what lies ahead for the Mortal Realms of Age Of Sigmar and Warhammer Underworlds: Shadespire as well as a look ahead at a new Daemonic book for your Khorne worshippers.
This big image appeared at GAMA towards the end of last week and then over on their blog too. You'll notice the 'fast-paced tactical arena combat' line there which is making people think that it might be an expansion on the Gorechosen formula.
One would imagine we're going to see some new Gladiatorial style miniatures for the Stormcast Eternals, Khorne Bloodbound and more in the future. It would certainly make for tactical play with only a handful of miniatures needed to take part.
We'll find out more at the announcement this week before AdeptiCon which Dawn & Gianna are covering.
Blood For The Blood God
Looking ahead to April there is going to be another book for the forces of the Blood God, Blades Of Khorne.
Much like with the Disciples Of Tzeentch book this will solidify the faction with some new rules, new tactics, magical weapons, allegiance abilities and command traits. There won't be new models for the release, they have quite enough already, but there will be new opportunities for gamers.
So, if you're in love with the smell of blood on the battlefield then this should be a book worth snapping up for your games of Age Of Sigmar.
What do you think?

Shadespire…whose arena will it be in? Is the stormcast fighting in a khorne arena or are the khorne guys fighting in a stormcast arena?
In a Khorne one I would imagine. Trapped heroes made to fight to the death
That’s what I assumed but then wouldn’t that just be Gorechosen again? Maybe it is some other arena and they are all held against their will…skaven maybe?
Could be interesting in that it allows you to feel a certain degree of sympathy for the ‘bad guys’.
I reckon someone else. Name “Shadespire” doesn’t sound Khorny enough (Bloodspire or Skullspire maybe).
Possibly Dark (A)Elves or Tzeentch?
I wonder if it will be like some run-down area of one of the Free Cities, or maybe a “neutral city”, a place under the control of none of the factions.
Just notice, the architecture in the background of the box art looks to be either Dark Aelf, Undead or Necron.
Can probably rule out Necrons.
The art style in that poster looks quite deliberately different from GW’s normal style, which makes it look like they’re trying to appeal to a different type of customer. And I think they’ve said this game is different from anything they’ve done before and is designed for competitive play (which in itself I’ve never ever heard from them in the past!). Maybe they’re aiming to lure in some of the X wing or Magic crowds? Maybe we’ll see prepaints from GW! It’ll be interesting to see.
This is what i was thinking… Heroes with weapons and armor and skill upgrades… or maybe some sort of card based fighting mechanics where the deck is tailored by the owner? Maybe even some sort of “upgrade packs” or “buy this champion and get these cards” to swoop in on the X-wing stuff…. at least my thoughts if they are trying to hit a different part of the market.
sounds interesting game wise.
The artwork for Shadespire has a more Pathfinder/D&D feal to it than a GW game so maybe they are looking to expand their customer base.
If Gorechosen was simply a beta test for Shadespire, maybe Armageddon is a beta test for next iteration of Necromunda?
Maybe this is all a dream within a dream?
I’ll get my tinfoil hat.
Bit of a dream- I’m pretty sure that Armageddon is Necromunda. Otherwise, they might make a “ganger” crew for us to use with the old Necromunda minis. Either way, there are certain to be some sort of humans about.
I figured it would fit into their business model much better if the new Necromunda used existing minis and factions (like Mordheim did). I’m more interested in playing a Genestealer Cult in the underhive anyway.
Someone on the Yaktribe contacted SG to ask if SW:A was Necromunda and they said they had nothing to do with it and they were still going to be doing Necromunda.
There’s already a Genestealer Cult gang, rules anyway, check it out on Yaktribe.
Definitely not. As @lostegg said, Necromunda re-release is still very much on the cards in the next few years.
It wasn’t a beta test. Gore Chosen is individuals fighting to the death. From what I have heard this is more akin to Frostgrave with small bands of fighters
Small bands, eh? Interesting… was sorta looking at it as a “hero vs hero” type fight….
GW will still want to sell models for this, they won’t want a game where you can play with one model. I expect a game with a low model count but each miniature will be an individual hero /character. It might even look like a tabletop version of something like DOTA. I would also expect to see this supported with new character sets, perhaps recycling AoS models into Shadespire packs.
May still use the Gorechosen format just with teams of dudes. Hopefully we’ll see more details from GW soon.
To think I let people get my hopes up that this would be a reboot of Mordheim…
Yes, you did.
They will most certainly reboot Mordheim (probably an updated rules set and a new location).
but they probably won’t be rebooting Mordheim at the same time they’re rebooting Necromunda.
Oh, oh, can’t wait to get my hands on that new Khorne Battletome!
I disagree that they’ve got enough models already, I’m always ready for more. Can’t wait to see what new Khorne goodies are in the Shadespire box.
Khorne, Tzeentch and Nurgle I’d argue have very complete ranges. If the rumours of Mortarion making an appearance “soon” in 40k are true, then we’ll see some of that Nurgle range most likely make its way to AoS. AoS seems to have come on leaps and bounds over the last year or so, but I’d vastly prefer attention being paid to some of the other races. It would be nice to see what Empire (free people?) has become, or Elves of some desciption (the new Wood Elf stuff is nice, it’s just it doesn’t actually have any wood elves in… Read more »
Only thing Nurgle really needs is a Great Unclean One in plastique, although some good looking plague zombies would be nice too and may cross well between AoS and 40k same as the Tzaangors.
I also look forward to seeing what has become of the free people and non-Flesh-Eater death stuff.
Forgot Beasts of Nurgle in plastic also.
I think AoS desperately needs the Free People human faction to give it a relatable frame of reference. There’s currently no context in which people can relate to the world because everything is so Alien. Even if you play a different race I think you always need the human faction as the standard against which everything else is compared. A Dwarf is only a Dwarf because they are shorter than humans.
Are there plastic Hounds of Khorne? Maybe some redesigns of some of the characters like Scylla or something similar?
Regular reveals, teaser posts, and the speculations in the gaming community are more rife than ever. I tip my hat to the new GW marketing and SoMe teams for the amazing job they’re doing. They’ve got me hooked!
Shadespire could be interesting, it’s a very different concept as an out and out organised play competitive game. Feels like a response to x wing/tanks. I will personally be suprised if the design studio can deliver and support it. However, I personally don’t think x-wing is a good ruleset for competitive play, brilliant for fun games, so I think my expectations are not the norm.
