Wargaming Your Way With Open Combat Rules
February 28, 2015 by stvitusdancern
Second Thunder have taken to Kickstarter to help fund a printed version of their rule set Open Combat. This rule system has been available from their website as a PDF download since last October and now they would like to make a nice printed version for all of that like the feel of a real book.
Open Combat is a skirmish rule set that is set before the gun powder age and can be used in either historical or fantasy genres. What is nice about these rules is there is no set miniature ranges you need to play with, you can use whatever you have on hand.
It also only requires a two foot by two foot playing area. The rules will assist you in creating stats for each of your minis in your warband. Why not check out the Kickstarter page and see what you think.
Are you a rules collector like me?

Nice find I will have to take a closer look
Alright look good, so I had to back it. I really like true skirmish games and this looks like it will be ideal.
Looks like a nice independent rules system and to be honest being able to point up any model you have is a big bonus will let me play my Kings of War undead V my Lord of the rings Dwarfs.
Not many rules systems are truly independent, but this offering shows some early signs of turning into something worth getting into. Having purchased the PDF download and played through a few examples, it is slick, fun and allows game play resolution totally independant upon the setting you prefer to play in. I also like the sounds of a possible ‘firearms’ version. Keep your eyes on the kickstarter, Second Thunder web site and an ear on podcasts such as Meeples & Miniatures for news. No, I have no financial connection to Second Thunder or Carl Brown, but I do like to,… Read more »
Kickstarted it as soon as I saw it on KS. 🙂
How does it compare to something like Savage Worlds Showdown, the free set from Pinnacle?
