Take Part In Malev’s One Box Wargame Community Challenge
August 20, 2024 by brennon
Malev Da Shinobi has launched his One Box Wargame Challenge in combination with Wargames Atlantic and you could take part! Inspired by the Cannon Fodder plastic set, Malev dived into designing a game using just one box of miniatures and from that, the challenge was given life!
One Box Wargame Challenge // Wargames Atlantic
The idea behind the One Box Wargame Challenge is that you take one single box, blister pack or digital STL pack and turn it into a wargame that can be played using just the miniatures from that set. The design must make use of the contents of that box and draw inspiration from them for the overall theme.
If this has already got your gears turning, you can check out Malev's video below where he talks through the process of bringing his game to life...
Making A Miniatures Game From One Box // Malev
That should give you an idea of how your game could come to life. There's no real limit to your imagination here and considering what's included in the vast library of plastic miniatures from Wargames Atlantic and the Atlantic Digital collection, you've got no shortage of options for you to choose from as a starting point.
One Box Wargame Challenge - Guidelines // Wargames Atlantic
As mentioned in the details above, the box of miniatures doesn't have to come from Wargames Atlantic but they have a pretty solid selection of options for you to choose from. There's no reason you couldn't dive into your pile of potential and pick up a bunch of miniatures you've had sitting around for a while and make that focus of your wargame.
This already sounds like a great idea and hopefully, it will spawn some fun and interesting indie projects that people can get stuck into. I imagine that folks already have some fun ideas as to what they could create. Maybe this will inspire you to play around and try your hand at game design.

If I was more creative I feel this could be a great way to start something. But my creativity stops at “a box of tanks and make a tank war game and lets call it TANKS”
TONKS v TONKS !1l1!!!one!
As soon as I saw Wargames Atlantic’s Cannon Fodder, I thought it was one of the best, most versatile sets ever. I made some Juve gangers and some Servitors out of my box (with some other bits. Why does no one make servitor bits?!). Malev’s One Box Wargame video is one of the best pieces of content to drop in a long time; a real breath of fresh, creative air in a category that’s cluttered with a lot of really same-y videos. I’m going to give this a go, maybe with one of the Heavy Gear army boxes from DP9.
This is a fun challenge: one thing I think would work well would be GW Imperialis boxes – as good and bad are just two different colours; also most of the Warlord Epic ranges – again, easy to break up into two sides, with timeframes from raging elephants, ECW, to ACW.
Easy to paint, easy to build into a simple game.
And for more modern stuff, I’d pick the GHQ range of WW2 or Modern to do the same.
