Form Up Behind V&V Miniatures’ Viking Shieldwall
June 6, 2019 by brennon
The shieldwall formation is one of the most iconic images of the Dark Age. You'll have noticed it popping up in shows like Vikings and The Last Kingdom, a locked together array of shields, all showing the icon of a particular family or warrior. Well, V&V Miniatures have decided that you need it on the tabletop too and are working on a set which shows off this formation.
The shieldwall was a formation which relied on you trusting your companions to either side of you. One warrior would be protecting you whilst you protected the next. If you were disciplined enough there was no way that the enemy was going to smash through. Through a slow grind, you could then push forward and trample your enemy into the dirt.
Of course, the shieldwall had its weaknesses and if you were flanked it was pretty hard to turn around and deal with the enemy as you were closely packed together.
This set of miniatures provides you with a ranked up selection of models which you could use in the front rank of your units or perhaps just to indicate you've taken a particular action in a game like SAGA.
I think this is a cool idea and maybe we'll see them do other formations like the svinfylking or boar's snout so you can array your armies in the proper Viking way!
What do you make of this idea?

That going to look brilliant on the table.
Fantastic looking shieldwall – I will absolutely be purchasing one of these when it is available. I concur with @brennon in his hopes that V&V also make other Viking formations. They would be really cool for both wargaming as well as for dioramas.
we all know how hard it is to rank miniatures sometimes (with weapons going off on all angles) this is a good idea!
Nice mini, could be tough to paint tho. Reminds me of the Imperial Roman testudo Warlord Games used to make.
