The Vigiles Urbani Stalk The Streets In Gangs Of Rome II
February 28, 2023 by brennon
Footsore Miniatures & Games are going to be bringing Gangs Of Rome back to the tabletop soon thanks to a new Kickstarter launching in March. As well as revamping and updating the rules for this skirmish game set on the streets of Rome, they are also going to be working on some new miniatures too.
Vigiles Urbani // Gangs Of Rome
Some of the recent previews have been for a set of six miniatures that represent the Vigiles Urbani. These chaps were the firefighters and the police of Ancient Rome. They were originally tasked with watching out for fires and making sure that they were suppressed but also spent time keeping an eye out for burglars and escaped slaves.

Interestingly (thanks Wikipedia), the Vigiles started out as an organisation of slaves that were forced into the job. They did end up being made up of freedmen eventually though and their job remained pretty much the same throughout their time. They would be seen wandering the streets and docks, keeping an eye out for ruffians and bringing them to justice.

It will be fascinating to see what role they play in your games of Gangs Of Rome. I would imagine that you could have fun with them wandering the streets, trying to shut down whatever illegal activity you've been getting up to!
Something that I found rather funny was that when the Great Fire Of Rome broke out, the Vigiles Urbani didn't do much firefighting. They actually spent more time looting and ransacking the city. You just can't get the staff...
As mentioned, the new Kickstarter for Gangs Of Rome II is going to be going live in March. If you want to learn more about the game then the folks behind it are sharing all sorts of information over on the Facebook Group for the game.
Will you be diving back into Gangs Of Rome when this Kickstarter goes live?

Ooh Roman peelers.?
THESE I LIKE!!!!! I always felt that the minis for the first game tended to stray a bit on the hollywood/fantasy side of things (rather than being purely historical). I always felt that your gang members would be equipped with knives and clubs (and even just fisticuffs) rather than walking the streets in full gladiator paraphernalia. Weapons that could be hidden easily or simply dropped in the street (as a length of wood has little to no value). These chaps were the reason why citizens didn’t wander around all tooled up for a fight (at least not openly). If there’s… Read more »
