February 21, 2024 by brennon
The Two Thin Coats range from Duncan Rhodes and Trans Atlantis Games is now live on Kickstarter The new campaign is packed with new colours for you to use when diving in and painting your miniatures.
Two Thin Coats Wave Three // Trans Atlantis Games
Wave Three is a big expansion to the Two Thin Coats range, expanding on the original 120 paints. There are some pretty fascinating new colour options coming as part of the campaign that covers some traditional colours as well as some new, interesting ideas for the Two Thin Coats range.
Two Thin Coats Blues // Trans Atlantis Games
The folks at Trans Atlantis Games, alongside Duncan Rhodes and the Painting Academy community, have worked to fill in some of the gaps in the range and work on colours that they like using as well as those that they felt would be useful when it comes to making the range useful for a wider selection of painters.
Two Thin Coats Bright // Trans Atlantis Games
There are some fascinating new colours in the range that cover a lot of traditional paints like your regular metallics through to some properly vibrant colours like the ones above. There are also some fun, coloured metallics in the mix as well.
Two Thin Coats Coloured Metallics // Trans Atlantis Games
Based on feedback from painters, they have been working to improve the consistency of the paints across the board within their highlight collection and improve the metallic range too. The idea is that there will be a high-quality finish to all of the paints in the range so they will operate the same regardless of the colour, even for tough colours like white and yellow.
Two Thin Coats Metallics // Trans Atlantis Games
Throughout this particular article, we've been showing off some of the examples of the paint in use. I like those coloured metallics in particular as they could be a lot of fun for those wanting to paint a lot of the vibrant Fantasy and Sci-Fi armies out there for a myriad of different games. It also seems perfect for something Cyberpunk!
Two Thin Coats Purples // Trans Atlantis Games
There is a lot more to come as part of the campaign so keep an eye out for it HERE. There are going to be Early Bird offers for you to dive into and there will be all manner of surprise popping up as well in terms of unlocks, add-ons and more.
Two Thin Coats Browns // Trans Atlantis Games
Whether you're looking for something traditional like their browns, purples and basic metallics or something a bit off the wall, the new Two Thin Coats range seems like it has paint that will suit you.
Pledge Options & More
When it comes to the different paints, you can see a breakdown of how they break down below. You have the various Triads alongside the Brights, Metallics, Washes and Effects. This should allow you to fill some gaps in your collection.

Pushed by influencers and purposeful scarcity to keep prices high means a nope for me. There are about a dozen shops I can find this product in the USA and they only have single bottles but no way to purchase sets. I am told they have no idea when they will receive wave 2 as they can barely get restock of wave 1. The lack of product availability is keeping me away. The fact that the paints only sell at full MSRP and expensive means it is an expensive investment. In the meantime, Vallejo, Army Painter and AK Gen3 are… Read more »
I’m with you. My local shop I noticed has a rack of these, but with several hundred paints on my desk, mostly AK Gen3 (my favourite), and Vallejo (being replaced by AK as I run out), I just can’t see myself buying any other brand. Why would I?
I don’t do social media so have no use for “influencers”.
Plus, Rhodes should get a model for his KS. Dopey faced doofus paintnerd just makes me hate seeing the ad. Every time.
I don’t think its purposeful scarcity on the part of Transatlantis or Duncan, US Distribution is handled by Asmodee.
Then they need to fire Asmodee. If you are about to go into Wave 3 but you can’t keep wave 1 in stock nor any information about wave 2 distribution you have a problem if only KS backers can get paints.
Totally. Asmodee has a terrible track record for all things distribution wise.
And … let’s just call it: Kickstarter Exhaustion is real. If they haven’t even distributed Wave 2, then why is there a Wave 3? That sounds like what they used to call a “pyramid scheme”.
And replace them with who ?
I’m sure Duncan would appreciate having access to a shipping company that could be better and not as costly.
Asmodee caused the Monolith boardgame to operate a loss per unit. Unfortunately, even when a project successfully funds on KS, that doesn’t mean it will have good retail distribution. A friend of mine ran a roleplaying game that sells out when he sells the game an anime convention, but he cannot find a distributor for the game. And, unlike “one and done” boargames, painters want a distribution system suchthat they can pick up a bottle of a paint line of choice at any time. You don’t collect paint like you do miniatures and boardgames, so most hobbyists who decide to… Read more »
I doubt it is.
Heck … I suspect our American friends can name at least one brand of paint that isn’t available over here in Europe for the same reasons as Two Coats isn’t in the USA.
Global distribution is expensive and you need a lot of momentum to get to the point that the competitors have been for years.
Scarcity and cost are only issues because they’re a new company trying to sell stuff world wide.
You can’t expect them to operate on the same scale as GW or any of the existing companies with decades of experience in shipping.
It also creates the chicken&egg paradox as paints need a lot of momentum before they become viable alternatives to existing brands.
I kind of had the same issue with Scale75 kickstarters … and if I hadn’t seen that brand in a local webshop I probably would have been tempted.
Nice to see the range continue to expand. I had the chance to spend a day stat down with the folks from Transatlantis Games at a meetup and tried out just about every colour going from the first two waves. I was really impressed with their consistency and coverage, I think I’d rate them just behind the AK 3G paints which are my current go to favourites. I’ve not rushed out to buy loads even as a self admitted paint hoarder but I’d be more than happy to pick a few up here and there as needed to add to… Read more »
So if they’re not as good as AK Gen3… I’m DEFINITELY not wasting my time or money.
Hard pass!
I use watercolors over white gesso, works very similar to ‘contrast paints’, shading is a little time-consuming but I rarely need to do much highlighting since watercolors over a bright, white undercoat pretty much highlight themselves…. Watercolors are also VASTLY cheaper than acrylics (or oils), NEVER dry out – I’m using a kids’ paint set that is well over 25 years old and still as good as new – and ‘wet blending’ is pretty much a constant given, no ‘mediums’ required. Just water….. This technique takes some getting used to, you have to paint from light to dark and remember… Read more »
Well that’s one seriously old school way to do it! If it works for you, that’s awesome.
Haven’t heard that method for at least a quarter of a century, which makes one of us REALLY old ?
Nice! I just used a drop of Vallejo Ink with some craft paint, *not* mixed, over a colored primer. Like a wash, but not as thin as a wash, the paint settled into the recesses, allowing the primer to show through. Haven’t tried it on white primer, but should have a similar highlight effect.
Another over-priced paint set, like Citadel. No thanks.
