The heroes in a half shell are back as the first trailer for Michael Bay's new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie hits our screens.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

If you grew up in the 80s or 90s than you are probably familiar with this reptilian heroes. First appearing in comic form in 1984, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles started off as a parody of the grim and gritty style a lot of comics were going for at the time. They truly rose to fame when they came to the TV screen in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 1987 cartoon show, before going on to appear in a series of live action films.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Film

This latest version, produced by Michael Bay, has made a lot of changes. For one the feel of the film, from this trailer at least, is far more in keeping with the series' darker roots, although probably without the same element of parody, which is a shame.

The background of the turtles has also changed. Now April O'Neil, played by Megan Fox, is being tied to them through the implication that her father helped to create them, in conjunction with none other than The Shredder himself.

Shredder

So now both April and The Shredder are more closely linked to the Turtles, which should provide some interesting room for story developments. Quite where Master Splinter is going to fit into all this we don't know yet.

I'm rather cautious of this one. I love the Turtles, it's hard not to, and Michael Bay can make a decent popcorn movie from time to time (The Rock is a good example of an over-the-top action blockbuster). Still, I am worried about the Turtles loosing some of the character we all love them for. Just please, please, do not let this end up like Transformers!

What are your thoughts on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles returning to the cinema screen?
