Thorin Faces The Defiler In Forge World’s New Middle-earth Release
January 11, 2019 by dracs
Have I mentioned recently that I am rather fond of the Middle-earth Strategy Battle Game? Well that's not going to change, especially with Forge World releasing the next sculpt in their Character Series.
Thorin Oakenshield, newly crowned King Under the Mountain, in a battle to the death against Azog, the Defiler.
This diorama, which we first saw when it was revealed last December, features the two characters' epic confrontation at the end of the Battle of the Five Armies.
Standing atop a cracked sheet of ice, wielding their signature weapons of Orcrist and a giant lump of stone on a chain, the two are ready to end their conflict once and for all.
Of course, the miniatures have been designed so that they can be removed from the diorama base for use in the game itself.
They also have alternative weapon options. A mace for Azog, and a regular dwarf-made sword for Thorin, should you want to field him as he was equipped before Legolas turned up like some pointy-eared postman.
I have mentioned before that these are beautiful sculpts. The detail is excellent, capturing the look and character of their on-screen incarnations.
Say what you like about the third Hobbit film (and if given the chance I will, often and at length), but this was still a great confrontation and both models make for either an excellent display or some stand out game pieces.
Would you play using these figures, or keep them as a pristine display?

brilliant figures of the characters.
Great looking miniatures.
I like the figures individually, but “epic diorama” might be pushing it. They could look a bit more dynamic, like the two are actually engaging in battle. But, that’s just my opinion. Decent figures regardless.
They’re (very) nice figures, but I struggle to get too enthused as I wasn’t a huge fan of the films. Especially the third one.
I just rewatched them over Christmas, and still enjoyed the first two (especially the second), but there was more of what annoyed me in the third film, and that included the confrontation between these guys.
Really like these…. this may be my next Forge World purchase
A great diorama for an epic fight. Loved this clash and Battle of five armies in his extended version – a fantasy masterpiece
