Thor Is No Longer Worthy! Welcome A New Goddess Of Thunder!
July 16, 2014 by brennon
We don't usually dive into the world of comic books but this has been quite the big piece of news from Marvel. The Thor that you've come to know from comics and films is no longer worthy and has been replaced! See what you think of the new wielder of Mjolnir!
The change will come in October and while people are doubting whether or not it's going to last very long (remember when Wolverine was going to die for good?) it is quite an interesting change and I really want to know more about this shift of the balance of power in Asgard!
It seems as if the original Thor, pictured above, has become unworthy of his station and therefore has been replaced. While I have called her Fem Thor and Lady Thor there is no mistaking the fact that she is not a 'stand-in' according to Marvel. She IS Thor now.
I'm sure we'll know more in time!
That’s… hmm. I don’t know. If Thor was simply a title rather than a name, then I guess I could understand it and there are a few eligible Asgardians who could have taken on that role. But either this is one of those short story arcs that doesn’t last too long before everything goes back to the way it was.. or.. it’s just a really weird move that seems to go against the success of the recent Marvel movies which have included Thor / Thor 2, the Avengers and the upcoming Avengers sequel (and lets face it – Disney probably… Read more »
Ooooh! Wait, I get it! Disney wants to do a new line of (Marvel) Disney Princesses!
Actually, I would be okay with that. When you think about what absolutely awful characters the other “princesses” are, this would be a huge improvement for little girl role models.
I’m totally fine with the character change, but the name really doesn’t make sense at all. Thor is a name, not a title, as you say. I don’t see why she should suddenly be called Thor just because she has the hammer. The reason, obviously, is so they can continue to put “Thor” on the book cover, but that makes for convoluted storytelling.
Well this surely come out of left field. Nothing in comics is long lasting (not even death) so I am sure original Thor get’s Mjölnir back in some point so those that I find idea of Thor not being man weird don’t need to worry.
Certainly a weird one, Thor is the son of Odin not the daughter, that’s a legend you can’t really change… Maybe an alternate universe? Still the hammer itself isn’t Thor’s – it’s like Excalibur and chooses the wielder – so he could lose the hammer. I think Captain America had it once!
Anyway, the character looks cool, so why not?
This is actually part of story line so yes, male Thor will be back. I am actually amused by amount of rage that this has caused in fan boys all around internet. Besides Marvel’s Thor has never been faithful to Norse Mythology that character is based on. After all they made him alien least in movie universe.
Okay I am not a fan boy of Marvel Comics. Thor was my favourite character from when I used to read them at a mate’s house. But not read one for about 40 years. And with that confession there goes any geek cred I may have had. So as someone who doesn’t read comics maybe my opinion is not valid, but seeing this news just has me shaking my head. To me this is nothing but a cheap gimmick. It is not a positive move for feminism and doesn’t really say a lot for the masculine either. They lost an… Read more »
What’s really funny is that maybe, just maybe the people at marvel thought “what to do with the char..I know, he’s been a frog and a horse, why not make him a girl, tis will be fun”…and thanks to tumblr, people now assume it’s an SJW pandering move.
Not even the God of Thunder is safe from the marketing department.
It’s superhero comics, male or female, it’ll have the same tasty personality of a cardboard box, so nothing changed.
Hmmmm, not sure on this one, i love the male Thor adventures, not because he’s attractive to weak kneed girls everywhere, but because i enjoy them a lot, i’m intrigued to know more of this new “she Thor”
To be honest, I really like this move on Marvel’s part. It’s a good move towards more positive portrayals of women in comics, which in superhero ones in particular can be very hit and miss. It’s also very good that the design is attractive, but practical, although that breastplate would ultimately crush her ribcage if she ever fell over. This also works better with Thor than it would for the other mainstay members of the Avengers. Captain America is the embodiment of a traditionally patriarchal cultural identity and since Iron Man’s identity is tied up with a suit of armour,… Read more »
There is a great deal of difference between female clothing as a disguise to get your phallic hammer back from a Giant and a sex change.
I am also less than convinced by any feminist agenda.
As said above a new principle character would have been better and made an unambiguous statement
Is it a positive move? A busty blonde? That’s the complaint some of my more “right on” friends have been making; it seems you can’t please some people. Personally I’m not a fan of super heroes and don’t care one way or another whether Thor is a boy, a girl or anything in between but the act of changing the gender to me just smacks of Pandering. It doesn’t really do anything for girls or women other than show them that girls can’t have heroes of their own but if they pester long enough the boys will let you have… Read more »
Kickass female super hero: excellent.
A new twist on Thor: bold and cool.
Boobplate: dear god, why? Functional armor please, no need to sex it up.
Yeah but.. particularly in the case of Thor.. if there was no boobplate, how would you even know the new Thor was a she? 😉
Not too hard, unless you cant tell the difference between a massive dude and a lithe but strong female.
Watching animes growing up made me incapable of distinguishing lithe male characters from lithe female characters without an establishing panty shot. But that’s more of a genre fault I guess.
The boobplate isn’t there to sex anything up. It’s a means by which the artist draws attention to gender defining features making the character easily recognisable by shape alone when her face isn’t visible. All cartoon characters are caricatures of real people, this means prominent features are exaggerated. On Men this usually means wide shoulders, square jaw and defined muscles. On women this usually means hips and boobs.
She Thor’s little Breastplate? It’s not sexualisation, it caricature.
This is not a great move for womankind. It won’t be a permanent move so all it tells girls is that a woman can temp in a male’s role until he gets his act together, then she can disappear again.
I like her a lot, she look almost like a Saint Seiya character, waiting to see more. About the armor… yeah might be better a full armor rather than bare skin, but is showing off how strong she is ( wish i have half of that muscle strength… ). Lady Sif had a more complete armor compared with Fem-Thor… By the way… Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D … is worth watching ?
I really liked it. The first few episodes feel like a by-the-numbers Joss Whedon show and the characters seemed both predictable and shallow.. but I personally found that the second half of the season really picked up. Very much looking forward to the next season.
Is THOR a timelord from Gallifrey that way he/she could be whatever they want?
Well Asgardians are aliens in Marvel universe so I quess that make sense.
It just dawned to me this all makes sense! Why they don’t just change the name and the release statement that says that “Whosoever holds this hammer, if HE be worthy, shall possess the power of … Thor” as the inscription on the hammer. He, Thor becomes unworthy of the hammer, so HE changes his sex to be a she.
Its the same person just new gender. I think it was a big mistake him going to Thailand. Look what they done to him. Got to give the surgeon credit, you can’t tell it’s the same person.
As stated above (and I was discussing this just last night with my wife) “this isn’t She-Thor, this IS Thor” is silly. It’s like “I have the power of Steve!” Like all the Asgardians and their chosen, she should be going by HER OWN name, Title the book “The Power of THOR” or something, but going around calling herself Thor makes as much sense as her going around and calling herself “Wilbur.” What’s Marvel’s mix-up cycle these days? It used to be 13 months, but I think the Bucky Cap went longer & I wasn’t paying attention to Octo-Spidey. Might… Read more »
I would agree with you that this will not last long. Yes based on Marvels past history alone. This is only a sales pitch and for a few releases, say 5 comics the sales will be super, then it will drop down to its normal level of sales and in a year or two it will be bellow before the change. Mainly because the true readers of this comic will most likely prefer the HE Thor that they grew to know and just stop reading about someone else. That’s when Marvel will do the switch back to just shut the… Read more »
