The Silver Bayonet; New McCullough Game Revealed!
March 4, 2021 by brennon
Nothing escapes the eye of Amazon and so that's how the new game from Joseph A. McCullough got revealed this week. The Silver Bayonet is going to be published by Osprey Games and will offer a dip into a world of Napoleonic-era horror later this year.

Forgive the blurry picture but this has been plucked from the depths of the internet! Still, it gives you a pretty good indication of what you're in for when this arrives in October. Here is the current fluff from the entry on Amazon for you to ponder over...
"As the wars of Napoleon ravage Europe, chaos and fear reign and the darkness that once clung to the shadows has been emboldened. Supernatural creatures - vampires, werewolves, ghouls, and worse take advantage of the havoc, striking out at isolated farms, villages, and even military units. Whether they are pursuing some master plan or simply revelling in their newfound freedom is unknown. Most people dismiss reports of these slaughters as the rantings of madmen or the lies of deserters, but a few know better."
All sounds good so far. I do like the Napoleonic Wars and I am a big fan of things that go bump in the night so this seems like it could be a match made in heaven.
Much like with many of McCullough's recent outings on the tabletop, this is going to be a skirmish wargame where you form a band of elite monster hunters. As per the description, Riflemen, Swordsmen, Engineers and the like will fight side-by-side with Mystics, Occultists and even a few creatures to take down terrifying foes.
It all sounds like it should make for a lot of fun on the tabletop and it will be playable solo, cooperatively or in a competitive fashion. I think I'm interested in the idea of delving into this cooperatively with a pal or two.
In addition to all of that, it will also have interlinked adventures that you can play through so your soldiers gain experience and try to shrug off terrible wounds. "It is a game of action and adventure, where musket and sabre meet tooth and claw."
All I can think of right now is an excellent French film I watched way back called Brotherhood Of The Wolf (Le Pacte des Loups) which had swashbuckling and blackpowder-using hunters going up against a terrible beast.
It should also be noted that it looks like North Star Military Figures are going to be supporting this with their line of miniatures too. There is quite a lot to draw from!
I am totally ready to see Sharpe take on a werewolf...

Interesting. I will keep an eye on this.
There’s a book series by Jasper Kent that mixes vampires into the historical pot of the Napoleonic wars. A few films and video games have used the time period for horror as well. This will be a good setting for a game.
I’ve read the first book in the series (Twelve) an it was excellent. I didn’t know it had become a series. Going to have to catch up!
I’m a sucker for anything with Joe’s name on. Count me in!
This looks very interesting.
Good shout out on the Brotherhood of the Wolf, it’s a great genre blended film – period drama, monster horror, martial arts. Set between the French-Indian Wars and the French Revolution. I’m now thinking about pitting some of the Savage Frontier models and the beasties from the Warlord Games Mythic Americas range.
Ooh should be great adding supernatural creatures to the battles.
There was also the “fantasy” version of Napoleonics “Flintlock”, not sure if any of those figures might prove useful. Alternative Armies do that range, and although the sculpting is quite old in style and some of the sculpts are a bit rough, there are some really nice individual models in the range.
I think it’s “Flintloque”, to help people googling.
I didn’t need to Google that one. Its Flintloque by Alternative Armies
Very interesting setup, especially, if there will be a Northstar range for it!
There is a hungarian comic series (The last but one hussar) with a similar vibe (its set around WW1, but still, hussars are hunting mystichal creatures):

Hopeful for some minis from Northstar, plus it’s another incentive to crack on with those Russian Naps I have on the pile o’shane.
Not for me, but good to see something half way original come out for a change.
Nice to get a different setting for the horror~fantasy genre, that late 18th – early 19th Century mid-late Georgian period. Not quite Strange and Norrel flavour of magic, but close.
