Stormcast Vanguard Hunters Scout Ahead In Age Of Sigmar
January 24, 2017 by brennon
A new selection of Stormcast Eternal models popped up from Games Workshop forming the scouting force for a larger army. See what you make of the Vanguard Hunters and their Gryph Hounds for Age Of Sigmar.
Known as the Vanguard Chamber they will be getting themselves a new Battletome with additional rules for these wild hunters.
Representing the forces of Sigmar that have spent a lot of time out there in the Realms rather than amongst the shining buildings of Azyr they have a sleeker and agile look to them. They also cloak themselves in furs giving them a decidedly more feral look.
Accompanying them as they range far and wide are the Gryph Hounds.
These Gryph Hounds are decidedly more dangerous looking than the ones we've seen so far. Like the Hunters above they appear more feral and ready to rip apart enemies with those sharp beaks and claws.
We were also told to watch out for the Aetherwing and the Gryph-Chargers - watch this space.
What do you think of the new models?

More Sigmarines that don’t look much different from all others before them.
As a fan of Age of Sigmar, and someone who likes the Stormcast line, these are a nice variant addition. Having painted up twenty or so of them and being familiar with the models, these are
Significantly different.
I love Stormcast and have a good sized army of them, but do we really need more chubby C3PO-looking dudes? Do some other factions GW FFS.
Gryph Hounds are a welcome sight though.
I think their approach is to bring out new factions over time whilst adding to the existing ones to give more options to players.
We’ve been seeing this with the way factions have been added in most cases although we’re yet to see more Fyreslayers and Orruks in any large numbers.
I would also guess that the Stormcast are one of their most popular factions in AoS so makes sense to keep bolstering their line-up.
But yes…would be nice to see the Aelfs and Duardin now.
Are you guys ever going to start delving in to AOS and giving it some coverage? Would love it if you did.
Hopefully – we have mentioned on XLBS that we’re looking at seeing if AJ can help us out on that front 🙂
The faction you release the most stuff for probably will be the most popular because they keep getting the new stuff. Like space marines.
Totally agree about the Stormcasts.
I like the gryph hounds as well, maybe as animated statues in one of our AD&D games. I would paint them as stone. The stiffer poses would actually add to their appeal!
Hmmm… will the hounds be sold separately?
The Gryph Hounds are very nice, don’t much like the “repeating-like crossbow” though…
I’ve got nothing against Stormcast, but in the top picture, I honestly have to double take each time I see it to make sure they aren’t holding bolters. The models are fine, I’ve nothing against them, I’m just not that interested in the Stormcast aesthetic. They seem a little dull, especially after the previous (Eldar) announcement (a tough act to follow really). I’d rather have seen an update to another faction more than anything else; for instance, I found the Wood Elf and Tzeentch infinity more interesting, and I’d love to see some other factions* get a bit of love.… Read more »
I like these. I especially like the gryph hounds. The one thing I’m not sold on is the auto-crossbows (they really do give you the impression of a bolter). I’ll probably end up getting these at some point.
Nice bolt….throwing devices?
Seriously now, they have to be an in house joke at GW right? They know it, we all know it, look at them. Lets not beat around the bush here people! LOOK AT THEM BOLTERS!
I agree with the relative positiveness in the comments though, both sets here are good additions to the line but I just… I just want gw to own their jokes, don’t just put em out and ignore em like they aren’t there! Own that shiz G DUBS!
These are a miss for me, they are obviously just fantasy Space Marines which is fine if youre into that sort of thing but not exactly imaginative or exciting.
I’m a big fan of the Sigmarines but not these. I’m not keen on the helmets, at first glance it looks like they’ve armoured plated their brains….
Ooh but love the griffs 😉
Oh, look, they do have faces. 🙂
I’m just a bit puzzled why those fantasy guys are carrying bolters with superfluous crossbow-y bits attached to them. Somehow those parts put together don’t form a functional whole. You’d need either the barrel or the crossbow with string. Not half of both.
I do like the Gryph hounds. They look good and could be useful in many different games.
Chewbacca’s crossbow didn’t have a string.
well, a functional one anyway.
Fair enough. So the Stormcast Eternals are actually using Bowcasters, which are kind of like miniature railguns.
On account of referring to Wookiees and railguns that grants them a bonus point. 🙂
the hounds look fantastic.
lol – when I first saw photos of these I totally thought they had brought stormcasts to WH40k !
Funny how they have now turned back into human bodies inside insead of ethereal whatever it was at first.
The puppies are nice though 😀
They’ve always been human inside the armour. It’s only when they die their souls turn to lightning and return back the the realm of heaven to be reforged. During each reforging they lose a part of who they were before they became Stormcast.
I’m really liking the sound of this new Battletome. Looks like more of a Stormcast scouting force. We still have yet to see the Aetherwing (mounted flying cav) and the Gryph-chargers (what ever these are).
I shall be adding a couple units of each of these to my Stormcast force.
I feel that this and the other stormcast are designed to be convertible into marines. This set with the crossbows just make it all the easier to do this.
These models made me throw up in my mouth a little. The fact that anyone buys these is everything that’s wrong with this hobby.
It baffles me how they go from the sheer brilliance of the Kairic Acolytes to this utter garbage all in the span of a month.
To each his own I guess. For me, people who belittle others’ choices are everything that is wrong with the hobby.
@ guges :
I like Stormcasts … so i’m wrong ?
Probably should go see a Doctor, because you seem to be having a severe overreaction to seeing some golden painted plastic men.
Oh No!!!! Look after yourself. You don’t have anything if you don’t have your health. *looks concerned*
Fully realized Sigmarines.
Not my cup of tea though.
Well, I like them. They represent a lighter, but still fully armoured (they are still Stormcast after all) class of unit that does the scouting and recon jobs for the Stormhosts, roles that any army needs to fulfill in one way or another. The models have nice action poses and look a bit more grizzled and experienced than the other Stormcast, representing warriors who have been fighting in the Mortal Realms with minimal support for far longer than most of their fellow Azyrite warriors. These are the soldiers who spend more time ambushing Chaos scum in the badlands than they… Read more »
Well said
@vetruviangeek pretty muc knocked the ball out of the park didn’t he? Kudos sir! Everyone should thumbs up the crap Out of his post
You’ve fallen for the Oldhammer propaganda in believing Chaos were the big bad guys. Who brought The Empire to its knees with plagues? Who was gnawing away at the Dwarf strongholds? Who had an empire that spanned the entire world? Skaven that’s who. The Lizardmen only defeated Clan Pestilens because their god turned up. Skaven managed to shank the Empire’s chosen one, then when that was redacted, they shanked him again during the end of times. They killed the most powerful sorcerer ever to walk the land, Nagash (his undead form is basically a shadow of how powerful he was… Read more »
