Osprey’s Folklore WWI Wargame, A War Transformed Coming Soon
August 28, 2023 by brennon
Osprey Games is looking towards the release of a brand new 28mm wargame at the end of September. A War Transformed by Frederick Silburn-Slater and illustrated by Dimitris Martinos is a tabletop game where folklore and horror mesh with World War I on the Doggerland Front.

Brought to the surface, the Doggerland which was the ancient bridge between Britain and Europe has now become a central battleground during the conflict. Your characters will be exploring strange landscapes and tackling raiding parties. World War I gets itself an eerie twist with your war machines and soldiers now covered in totems and talismans and classic conflicts being joined by other, stranger, forces that are threatening to destroy all.

There is no specific range of miniatures for A War Transformed but you can get your hands on a whole host of different options from North Star Military Figures or perhaps the plastic kits by Wargames Atlantic. The miniatures seen here are from North Star and were painted by Kev Dallimore.

When it comes to playing A War Transformed, it's a skirmish size affair where you'll control small bands of infantry, cavalry, artillery and more. The gameplay has been designed to be fast-paced and has an initiative bidding system build into it. Bring in the folklore elements and you've got a game that is very much hitting on the zeitgeist of the moment. I love the uncanny twist that we're seeing here, taking something familiar like World War I, and giving it an alternative look and feel that is going to be great for kitbashing.

I’d forgotten this. And hot on the heels of that Wargames Atlantic WW1 Brits box. Oh lordy!
I have it on pre-order. The movie Deathwatch is a guilty pleasure. Although I’d forgotten Laurence Fox is in it.
I’ve pre-ordered this and am very excited about the possibilities it offers. As is my usual want I’ll probably end up shifting the timeframe – I’m not a fan of WWI minis so will shift it slightly in time if I like the look of the game mechanics.
