Get A Sneak Peek Inside Midgard Heroic Battles’ Rulebook!

James Morris, the man behind the awesome new Fantasy wargame Midgard Heroic Battles was nice enough to give us a look inside the book! For those not aware, Midgard Heroic Battles allows you to play out heroic battles from history, myth and legend (and everything in between) in various scales and with whatever miniatures you have access to.

The photography inside the book has come from Pete Jenkins who took some excellent shots for the book including the Sorcery chapter that you see below. This also showcases some of the miniatures used throughout Midgard Heroic Battles to showcase the game. Here, we have some of the excellent Elf King miniatures by Lucid Eye which perfectly fit the vibe of Midgard and what Morris was trying to achieve with the game which crosses the divide between the Historical and the Fantastical.
Sorcery // Midgard Heroic Battles
Throughout the book, the various sections are narrated by Raedwald (the 7th Century King of East Anglia) and Morrigan (Celtic goddess of Death and Battle) who offer advice to the hero throughout the book. This is a neat touch and reminds me of the SAGA books and the old Mordheim rulebook where you'd have in-character information provided alongside the actual mechanics.

In this case, the two characters help to continue the theme of Historical wargaming and Fantasy wargaming coming together. Raedwald covers the rational, Historical side of the spectrum whilst Morrigan emphasises the heroic and fantastical elements. They are both represented on the cover by Jon Hodgson as you'll have noted!
Just for me, Morris also shared a section of the book featuring sample armies for use in Midgard Heroic Battles. Of course, they had to show me the Dwarf Force List!
Dwarf Forces // Midgard Heroic Battles
This is just one of twelve lists that cover different settings. This covers a suggested force of around 300 to 400 points which equates to between eight and twelve units per side with three of four heroes to lead them. The Dwarves are paired against the Orc warband which makes sense considering their classic enmity! Whilst this is the suggested way to build a Dwarf or Orc force, this is by no means the hard and fast rules and Morris encourages you to simply make your own force using the Force Creation chapter at the back of the book.

This does give you the tools to create your force to fit the setting. Additionally, community feedback has been great regarding the rules themselves and the creativity that goes into building your bespoke armies for Midgard. This should mean that they can cater to different wargamers and those with vastly eclectic collections! I'm sure some folks have already got some good ideas as to what miniatures they want to use and the armies they want to build.
If this has intrigued you further regarding Midgard Heroic Battles, make sure to get your pre-orders in for the UK, USA and non-EU Rest Of The World via Reisswitz Press. For the EU, you can get your rules via Karwansaray Publishing.

not starting another game… not starting.
But if you already have figures then why not? You might like it. It’s only a wafer thin mint.
Aside from two teams of Frostgrave wiz0rds I don’t have any fitting miniatures. (And also no bucket.)
Metal golems (bot war) vs prehistoric halflings (murder teddies)….Sorted
I pre-ordered this second it was available. Cannot wait to get it!
I plan to use it with all my Warhammer Orcs & Goblins, plus a mountain of Victrix which will be a barbarian horde.
Will add dwarfs and other things. This is what Old World by GW I think wanted to be …
So it’s not a random movement game by the cult of the lardies, but simply a game published by them.
I could say I don’t need more rules, but that would not be true.
The title had me confused as I thought it would only be vikings … but then I did get a load of vikings recently.
It would be interesting to see the same scenario done with multiple generic systems just to see what the actual mechanical differences in gameplay and outcome would be.
Just got mine through the door, right just had thought after finding out no weekenders i have an excuse now not to go to the shops on Sunday, new rule system to learn..brilliant.
