Skirmish Warfare Japanese Style In Daisho By Gentlemanly Warfare
June 22, 2015 by stvitusdancern
The Ministry of Gentlemanly Warfare in cooperation with North Star Military Figures has a new rule set, Daishō that should be available in approximately one months time.
This new rule set is staged in ancient feudal Japan and allows you to field samurai, ronin, ninjas, monks and any other troop type that would be appropriate for this time period, it is set in a mythical Nippon.
The game is scaled for five to fifteen miniatures per side and should play through in about one hour or so depending on the model count.
I know that there are other rule sets available in similar settings, but I have been hearing rumblings about this game and we thought it would have been released before now.
They did have a couple of tables at Salute this year and I must admit my curiosity has me anxious to get a copy, put into play and do a thorough review for you all.
Do you have what it take to be a Samurai?

looks really cool, Such an interesting history Japan has, their approach to warfare is very interesting as well with different approaches to armor , swords and combat really like to see more of this game.
Sounds very cool! I love samurai and small skirmish would be awesome.
Only thing that would make me jump on it faster is if it was Wuxia, I have a serious soft spot for china, kung fu and Wuxia flicks.
I’d be interested in seeing how it compares to Ospreys Ronin. Ronin is a little too detailed for my taste so a lighter skirmish system would be ideal.
Hi Koraski,
Daisho is based on the same core rules as In Her Majesty’s Name (our first game) suitably modified to suit this splendid genre.
At Salute people were picking up the game in five minutes and then playing mostly without any assistance from us at all. We watched with considerable pleasure as the non-gamer girlfriend of a chap handed him his ass, and several youngsters beat their fathers.
Cheers,
Craig
Thank you for the article Gianna.
We intended to send you a copy as soon as the first printed ones arrived in a couple of weeks for you to review.
Charles and I, the Men from the Ministry, are looking forwards to reading what people think of our new venture.
Cheers,
Craig
Oooh looks interesting. Will try and pick it up when I can. 😀 Love the Samurai-era Japan and the fantasy element to it too!
Bushido has much of this already. If you like the period you might give that game a look. It’s great fun
Oh okay. 🙂 I’ll take a peek.
Thanks.
Interesting
That does look rather interesting.
I really hope this the game I have been waiting for. I have far too many unpainted Samurai and at only 5 to 15 models needed for this I still will have but at least I will have some painted ones.
I know they had some pretty spectacularly large battles in feudal Japan but I find individual combat aspect more appealing as for me as it brings out the flavour of the period. So a good set of skirmish rules is what I want.
Good people of BoW, the game is now available through North Star Miniatures: http://northstarfigures.com/list.php?man=201&page=1
More details on the game can be found here: https://daishogame.wordpress.com/
The advantage that Daisho has over other samurai games is that it is not wedded to a specific range or scale of figures. You can use pretty much anything you have or buy the figures you like most.
And Gianna, a copy of Daisho shall be on its way to BoW as soon as Warren gives me the address.
