SITREP Ops Center Episode 10: Vietnam Arenas Of Conflict
August 17, 2019 by stvitusdancern
Big Jim "Oriskany" is back with the next installment of the Ops Center with the follow up to the smash hit last episode. He takes you back to 'Nam and talks how the armies handled their AOs (areas of operations). He is building up to some amazing scenarios for gaming and he shows you some excellent exampleson how to play the conflict of Vietnam.
Grab your rifle and let's saddle up!
Wow! Another great entry.
I didn’t realize how widespread the fighting was and therefore how many options gamers could have for settings. Also the variety of combatants allows gamers more flexibility than you would originally think with their minis.
Thanks very much! Yeah, different areas, different things to feature and void on your tables, depending on where you’re most interested in wargaming. 😀
a great video jim your lang vei base looks familiar for some reason.
Thanks, @zorg – that, that Lang Vei table might have appeared in a previous forum thread at one point. 😀
Today, August 18th is Vietnam Veterans day in Australia. https://www.awm.gov.au/articles/blog/vietnam-veterans-day
This corresponds to the anniversary of the battle of Long Tan.
Also a new movie “Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan” has been released. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yu-0P0lG5Uc
Good note, @thunderchildobs – The Australian Task Force was part of 2nd US Field Force, III Corps Sector, Phuoc Tuy Province (primarily). We see them marked on the III Corps map at 11:38, along with Long Thanh.
Another well done episode @oriskany
This will go into my video library and be used as quick reference when teaching others about where to chose proper battle areas for FoW: Vietnam.
For more detailed info to construct my campaign for FoW: Vietnam I’m also using a book I bought off of Amazon,
[Where We Were in Vietnam: A Comprehensive Guide to the Firebases and Militar Paperback – June 1, 2002
by Michael Kelley (Author)] it’s 850 pages of details coving the location of bases during the war. I’ve only begun to use it but it is very interesting.
If you’d like, @tomplar007 – I’ve found some pretty good maps that show fire base locations, and the NVA / VC base areas as mapped by the Americans and South Vietnamese. Sounds like you might already have them, but if not, I can send them over to you.
I would deffenetly like to see those maps Jim (@oriskany).
The more resources I can get my hands on the happier I am!
Epic. I will send them over today or tomorrow. 😀
Oh awesome you guys got a sponsor! Sweet!
Te usefullness of things like this can’t be underestimated. To be able to just pop in and see exactly where you need to set your games makes the whole experience so much more engaging.
Make sure you check out the SitRep Twitch Channel at 4pm EDT today where Jim and I will be playing something, set somewhere using a game system of some kind.
Thanks, @elessar2590 – Yeah, we’re chipping away at it. Growing a little every week.
Glad the episodes are coming across as not only entertaining (??) to the community, but useful. We’re aiming at presenting a range of ideas that people can quickly an easily take on board when either shopping for minis, building a table, or setting up a game. Just a couple pointers to give your table a hint of realism, gravity, and context, without weeks of research.
Just twenty minutes of Ops Center can help make your table “grognard proof.” 😀
“grognard proof.”
I need to photoshop a 1080p image that looks like a stamp across the screen that says, “grognard proof.”
As I’m playing around with making videos from ‘my’ BoW-Studio. Just for the fun of it.
(I might need to look for a expert to Skype in on my large monitor)
(but where to look for such a person). ?
{Whispering through the screen}(I know your super busy Jim, so your safe from being pestered)?
Grognards are like tanks. Your best defense against a grognard … is another grognard. Use these tips and hints to build your Vietnam game, and if anyone has an issue, send them to me. 😀
Now we need a documentary on the first action of a grognard against another grognard.
Annihilation theory, Unstoppable Force vs. Immovable Object and all that.
Post a link to your videos I’d like to see them
Seconded, @templar007 – and if you ever need a guest on Skype, I have experience and references. 😀
SITREP is currently broadcasting on YouTube & Twitch (9:00pm UTC)
Hex and Counters
Action is taking place in northern part of South Vietnam
US Marines are taking fire!
Thanks for the plug, @templar007 ! We had one false start but fixed it in short order, and once we got started we wrapped up a Valor& Victory game, complete with tanks and artillery, in about two and a half hours.

Thanks very much. After a two-week no-computer time due to a ruined harddrive I´m back. And already a good one here, before I continue with the Korea and Vietnam episode. I´m still very much into the city fighting. However, I will commit myself to the theatre of zone 2, where I can have ever so many helicopters. Battlefront have a nice set with six helis (I think) and some airmobile infantry, and I really want to use that. One question. The subterranean mazes vom VC. Did NVA have this as well? Did any Fighting take place INSIDE these mazes? I… Read more »
Great questions, @jemmy – and welcome back to the internet! 😀 If tunnel complexes are your thing I would stick mostly with the III Corps sector, where … no worries … there were TONS of helicopters too. III Corps should really be the “default” for wargamers, it has almost everything. Tanks, tunnels, helos, air strikes, ARVN, some river boat action, South Koreans, Australians, city AND jungle fighting. About the only things it’s missing are the really BIG mountains we see in I Corps and the Highlands of II Corps … and of course no big Marine Corps units … 🙁… Read more »
